Position Focus:The Director of Enterprise Architecture (EA) is an experienced leader and effective communicator. They lead the EA practice to align IT services with the university’s mission, enhance operational efficiency, and drive change. The Director is a consensus builder who can navigate competing interests to develop design standards that work in a widely distributed technology environment. The EA team collaborates closely with business stakeholders, IT architects and technologists in departments across the university. The Director oversees the daily operations and strategic direction of EA, focusing on these key areas:

Develop and implement an IT architecture strategy to optimize IT investments and ensure that architectural standards meet the evolving needs of Yale’s mission.

Consult with university partners to support digital transformations of university capabilities and selection of appropriate technologies.

Engage in annual portfolio planning to validate resource allocation and improve project success rates through alignment to architectural strategy, and selection of appropriate technologies.

Collaboratively establish and champion architectural standards, principles, reference models, and guidance to accelerate effective IT solution design and development.

Lead EA governance that is inclusive of all university stakeholders to ensure alignment with architecture strategy, principles, standards, and best practices.

Plan, define, deliver, and measure EA services such as application and technology portfolio management, roadmaps, and capability mapping.

Develop EA talent, support vendor management, and stay abreast of emerging technologies to maintain a competitive edge.

Manage disaster recovery policies and services to ensure infrastructure and system resilience.

Evangelize the value of Enterprise Architecture broadly and build strong relationships with champions and stakeholders.

Essential Duties

Establishes departmental goals and objectives, policies and procedures, functions with autonomy.

Manages the accountability and stewardship of human, financial and often physical resources in compliance with department and university strategic goals and objectives.

Communicate effectively; create clear and coherent written materials; ability to influence the direction of services, systems, or project/s.

May function as an advisor to department and/or university leadership.

May manage several large and complex projects simultaneously.

Collaborates with senior leadership to determine overall staffing levels to meet business objectives; responsible for managing budgets and/or financial risk.

Collaborates with department and/or university leadership to develop and implement strategic and operational goals, objectives and fiscal strategy and controls.

Required Education and ExperienceBachelor's Degree and ten years of experience or equivalent education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:Demonstrated experience in developing enterprise-wide architecture and architectural practices to support organizational strategies and priorities. Demonstrated experience in the design, planning, implementation, and management of the evolution of enterprise-scale IT solutions over time.

Required Skill/Ability 2:Demonstrated experience working in a matrixed environment and leading IT initiatives that cross traditional departmental boundaries.

Required Skill/Ability 3:Expert ability to facilitate meetings with senior leaders and stakeholders.

Required Skill/Ability 4:Proven ability to lead and manage staff. Proven ability to act as a trusted advisor.

Required Skill/Ability 5:Comprehensive analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Comprehensive interpersonal, written, communication, consulting, presentation, and organizational skills.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:Demonstrated experience with EA frameworks, tooling, and data to engage a federated group of practitioners in delivering EA services. Demonstrated experience leading large-scale IT implementations in the complex cultural, political, and technical university environment or equivalent organization.
