Job DescriptionWork Arrangement:This role is categorized as hybrid. The successful candidate is expected to report to Austin, TX, Roswell, GA, or Warren, MI three times per week, at minimum.The Role:The Senior “Mainframe & Java” Software Developer will participate in a major mainframe modernization at GM, providing an exciting opportunity to work in a fast-paced environment utilizing a modern development toolkit with the introduction of DevOps tools and practices for the GM Mainframe. The ideal candidate will have mixed experience in mainframe, Java, web, and integration development and be capable of designing multi-application cross-functional solutions. This individual will lead or co-lead modernization initiatives which consist of fortifying legacy applications or building new applications while developing plans to migrate key business functionality to the cloud or on-premises virtual infrastructure.What You'll DoIn this role, you are responsible for developing or enhancing software applications using a systematic and quantifiable approach to application development based on industry best practices and in accordance with GM's software development/project methodology (Agile mostly). The Software Developer will contribute to the definition of technical features and stories and will work hands-on writing code based on requirements and system specifications. Development activities will include updating existing software and/or developing new programs to address specific needs or solve particular business or technical problems. Additionally, our organization is undergoing a transformation to convert application code developed in traditional mainframe languages (PL1, Cobol) to JAVA running on Z Systems using assistance from AI LLM solutions (Generative AI). You will have exposure to this transformation and lead related activities.Estimation, Analysis, Design, Design reviews, Coding, Code reviews, unit testing in small increments of workTroubleshooting (root cause analysis) and debugging applications in different programming languages.Software testing and quality assurance with a focus on automation at all layers (Unit, System and Integration, UI)Document software code and ensure that technical documentation meets requirementsDevelop and integrate software with existing systems.Convert application code developed in traditional mainframe languages to JAVA and modern JAVA frameworks using Code Assistance tools and generative AI, leading development, testing, and deployment activities.Maintain standards compliance.Perform Level 3/on-call support for GPSC mainframe applications currently running in Production.Estimate and design small increments of work for other developersMentor less experienced team members and apprenticesReport status of assigned software development and/or maintenance tasks consistently following the specified software development methodologyPromote improvements in lean software engineering practices such as test-driven development, continuous integration, and continuous delivery.Communicate effectively.Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)BS in computer science, engineering, math or technical discipline or equivalent combination of education and recent, relevant work experience7+ years of experience as a developerLanguages: PL/1, Cobol, Java and JCLIMS DC/TM for transactional processingISPF Panels, CLIST, Skeletons, REXXDatabase: IMS & DB2, Oracle & PostgreSQLScheduling tools: IWSSource Code and deployment Management: Azure DevOps, IBM DBB, GitHub, GitActionsDevelopment IDE: IBM IDz/RDz, IntelliJ, VSCode, or other Eclipse basedExperience with modern mainframe toolsets to help with discovery, profiling, and migration automation.CI/CD experience in defining and managing the build, deployment, and release pipelines.What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)Hands-on experience using JAVA, REST, microservices, and containers (Pivotal Cloud Foundry or Docker/Kubernetes) and integrating mainframe and midrange applicationsSolid understanding of midrange platforms and frameworks such as SpringBoot and Spring.Agile, SCRUM, KANBAN methodologieszDevOps: IBM Developer for Z Systems, ADO, GIT, IBM DBBIBM tools: ITOM, RACF, Connect-Direct, IBM Rational Functional Tester, IBM Optim, ADDITest AutomationThis job may be eligible for relocation benefits.GM DOES NOT PROVIDE IMMIGRATION-RELATED SPONSORSHIP FOR THIS ROLE.
