Job Description
The
Certified Surgical Technologist (CST )
is a member of the operating room. They assist surgeons and other surgical staff during the surgical procedure. The
Surgical Technologist
works under the supervision of surgeon, registered nurse, or other surgical personnel and maintains constant vigilance for the maintenance of the sterile field to maximize patient safety. The technologist ensures that the operating room environment is safe, and the needed equipment is available. The Surgical Technologist keeps current with operating room techniques, procedures, instruments, supplies and equipment.
Essential Functions
Pre-Surgery Help setup the operating room by ensuring the room is clean, wiped down and all equipment/instruments are available and in working order Stock surgical supplies Wash and sterilize all equipment by using germicides and sterilizers Account for needles, suture, sponges and instruments Assist the Registered Nurse
During Surgery Anticipate the surgeons needs Ensure that there is a sterile field during all surgical procedures Observe and report a break in sterile techniques Operate and assemble lights, suction machines and other types of diagnostic equipment Count sponges, needles and other supplies before and after all operations
Post-Surgery Clean and restock the operating room Reset up room with equipment and supplies for the next procedure Assist the Registered Nurse
Other Duties Assist in sterile processing department by performing sterilizing, assembly and storage of medical supplies and surgical instruments. Performs other duties as requested Participates in departmental or organizational meetings and trainings Demonstrates ability to use equipment relevant to the position
Education, Experience & Skills Required Must have completed a post-secondary certificate or associate degree program in the field of surgical technology. Experience in a similar role preferred
License, Registration, and/or Certification
Certification preferred
Supervisory Responsibilities Mentor and orient new staff members May supervise Student Scrub Technicians
