Mount Sinai Hospital 5 North is a 43 bed medical/surgical unit staffed by registered nurses, CNAs, Unit Secretaries, and Telemetry Techs. Imbedded within 5 North is a four bed Medical Step-down Unit (MSU), to which patients requiring a higher level of monitoring and care are admitted. The patients who are admitted to 5 North require non-invasive cardiac monitoring due to acute or chronic illnesses. Patients who require long-term mechanical ventilation also make up our patient population. Mt. Sinai Hospital is a Certified Chest Pain Center and a Primary Stroke Center; the patients meeting inclusion criteria for either of these are admitted to 5 North as well.
The caregivers on 5 North/MSU are committed to providing excellent care to all patients that we serve. We believe that education and discharge planning are the keys to patients and families having the tools necessary to self-care at home. We work closely with our physicians, social workers, physical therapists, dietitians, and other members of the healthcare team to ensure that our patients and their families receive the highest level of care and information so that the best healthcare decisions can be made.
Staffing and scheduling is always of concern to our nursing staff. Caregivers can enter their requested schedule via self-scheduling, as well as request days off, shift switches, and overtime shifts. We are moving toward a patient: RN ratio of 4:1 and expanding our MSU to nine beds to better meet the needs of our patients. If you want a challenging work environment where you can meet a variety of patient care needs, 5 North is the unit for you!
