**Description:**

**GENERAL SUMMARY AND PURPOSE:**

Under the direction of a physician and in accordance with established methods, procedures and standards of practice, monitors and controls extracorporeal perfusion apparatus during cardiopulmonary bypass surgery and related procedures on patients.

**SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:**

+ Certified as a Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) required.

+ Two years of college and attendance at a school of perfusion or equivalent training required.

+ Completion of two years of post baccalaureate education or a bachelor's degree in Perfusion Technology preferred.

+ Minimum of two years of experience as a Perfusionist required.

+ Basic Life Support for Healthcare providers certification from either AHA, ARC or the Military Training Network is required at hire in all units, unless currently certified in ACLS and/or PALS as defined in the SAHS Certification Crosswalk.

**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:**

+ Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the Organizational Mission, Core Values, and Vision in behaviors, practices, policies and decisions.

+ Maintains all phases of life support during surgical procedures where the heart and lungs are not functioning, i.e. open heart surgery, through the use of a heart‑lung machine.

+ Controls anticoagulation as required for cardio­pulmonary bypass and termination.

+ Administers blood, drugs and anesthetic agents upon prescription. Maintains a Perfusion Record on each patient.

+ Assists in evaluation of new equipment, dis­posable items, and/or perfusion techniques.

+ Responsible for maintaining adequate inventory of replaceable items. Sets up and operates autologous blood salvaging systems for elective and emergency procedures.

+ Provides necessary consultation to medical and allied health staff.

+ Demonstrates an ability to interact profes­sionally and effectively with team members to ensure a colla­bora­tive plan of services.

+ Keeps supervisors and employees informed about issues.

+ Demonstrates self-directed learning and parti­ci­pation in continuing education/research to ensure profes­sional growth.
