Overview
The Unit Manager/Educator - of Women's Health & Newborn Care/NICU/Labor & Delivery is accountable for excellence in the overall management of shift-to-shift operations. Oversight delivered through practice standards, regulatory adherence, and safety compliance. Supervision of the clinical practice of nursing, delivery of patient care along with providing a strategic pathway for patients, families, and employees success. The manager is responsible for supervising human, fiscal, and other resources as needed to manage clinical nursing practice and patient care.
The manager is responsible for achieving and maintaining high standards in patient care and education, aligning with strategic goals in women's health, neonatal, and labor and delivery services. This role also involves identifying areas for improvement and spearheading departmental initiatives to enhance quality and safety.
The Unit Manager /Educator- of Women's Health & Newborn Care/NICU/Labor & Delivery reports directly to the Department Director and the Director of Nursing Services.
Responsibilities
1. Manager- a. Ensures hospital compliance with professional, regulatory, and government standards of care. Demonstrates the knowledge of needs for this specific department, which relates to insurance of adequate supplies and resources within budgetary guidelines. Engages in budget forecasting and supply management to ensure cost-effective department operations while maintaining quality and safety standards.
b. Ensures clinical and operational effectiveness through strategic planning, coordination of departmental meetings, and multidisciplinary collaboration to drive quality improvements.
c. Organize, supervise, and evaluate nursing activities to provide continuity of patient care by anticipating and maintaining staffing (through appropriate acuity measures, staffing regulations, and utilizing a multidisciplinary team approach. Collaborate with department leadership on long-term staffing and resource planning to accommodate census and acuity fluctuations.
d. Evokes in staff sense of responsibility and accountability for their work and continuous improvement of their performance. Develop and maintain departmental performance metrics; provide regular feedback and performance assessments to staff. e. Participates in committees and task force functions as assigned or needs identified.
2. Educator- a. Based on evidence based practice maintain patient teaching records and materials for both inpatient and outpatient services. b. Maintain all educational records for hospital and department specific compliance in required classes and certifications. c. Plan and coordinate all department supplies and equipment in-services d. Coordinate and plan all new hire orientation needs, including onboarding requirements and department training e. Monitor and detect any educational gaps in nursing care or documentation and provide action to mitigate gaps f. Conduct annual department-specific skill labs, periodic competency assessments, and individual skill checks tailored to current clinical practices. g. Provide quarterly mocks and simulations in both obstetrical and neonatal care h. Implement a structured feedback mechanism to continually assess educational effectiveness and incorporate staff input. i. Oversee the development of educational materials that reflect current evidence-based practices in obstetric and neonatal care, ensuring accessibility and relevance for both experienced staff and new hires.
Qualifications
1. Education a.) Bachelor's degree in Nursing required, or equivalent combination of experience and education. Master's degree in Nursing or related field preferred
2. Licensure/Certification a.) Current RN license in the state of Missouri. b.) Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification/Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required. c.) Other Hospital Required Certifications as assigned. d.) NRP e.) S.T.A.B.L.E. f.) Fetal Monitoring update every 2 years g.) ACLS h.) Advanced certifications in Obstetrics, Neonatal Nursing, or Maternal/Child Health (such as RNC-OB, RNC-NIC, or IBCLC) preferred
3. Work Experience a.) A minimum of seven years in a hospital or health system with responsibilities in developing, managing, monitoring and refining various aspects. b.) Experience should include demonstrated success in leadership, with a focus on team-building, conflict resolution, and quality improvement initiatives. c.) Direct experience in education, training, or preceptorship within women's health, neonatal, or L&D settings is highly desirable. d.) Strong communication and interpersonal skills to facilitate multidisciplinary collaboration, engage staff, and foster a positive work culture. e.) Ability to mentor and develop staff through effective coaching, feedback, and performance improvement strategies.
