Summary
Reports clinically to the Practice Site Physician(s) and administratively to an BMG Director. Under the direction of the physician(s), assumes responsibility for plan of care for obstetrical and gynecological patients selected in accordance with approved nurse midwifery protocols and in compliance with BMG policies and procedures. Seeks consultation from all members of health care team in accordance with nurse midwifery protocols. Manages postpartum course, including instruction, referrals and follow-up. Provides 24-hour on call coverage to caseload of obstetrical patients, including telephone triage. Identifies, manages and consults for obstetrical emergencies.

Provides professional medical care for selected obstetrical and gynecological patients by:
* Developing plan of care in accordance with approved nurse midwifery protocols.* Seeking consultation from all members of health care team in accordance with nurse midwifery protocols.* Providing education and clinical prenatal, antenatal and delivery services.* Managing normal labor and conducting delivery, including assessment of the maternal and fetal status, identifying deviations from normal and managing third state, episiotomy and normal repairs.* Managing maternal postpartum course, including instruction, referrals and follow-up.* Providing 24-hour on call coverage to patients, including telephone triage. Identifying, managing and consulting for obstetrical emergencies.* Documenting, coding and completing diagnosis of patient's condition to facilitate appropriate insurance reimbursement.* Maintaining appropriate records relating to professional services rendered.
Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:
* Developing and maintaining affiliation with professional organizations.* Assisting in development and compliance of clinical protocols, policies and procedures.* Participating in quality review and improvement programs; monitoring quality and outcomes of care rendered.* Communicating with physician(s) to ensure the quality and timeliness for services rendered to patients.* Performing other job related assignments and special project as assigned.

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:
* Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.* Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.* Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.* Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.* Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.* Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.* Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.* Complies with established organization and department policies.* Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience
* The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of a nurse midwifery educational program from an accredited school, Master's Degree in Nursing or related field preferred, current license to practice nurse midwifery in the state of Indiana, and national certification as a nurse midwife by the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM). Two to three years clinical experience working with obstetrical and gynecological patients is preferred.

* Requires thorough and complete understanding of nurse midwifery protocols and nursing care practices for obstetrical and gynecological patients.* Demonstrates high level of analytical ability necessary to assess patients and evaluate services rendered.* Demonstrates well developed interpersonal skills necessary to interact in a professional manner with patients and families, physicians and other health care professionals.* Demonstrates excellent communication skills, both oral and written to disseminate information in a clear, concise manner.* Demonstrates ability to function within legal boundaries of a Nurse Midwife and utilize knowledge of governing Indiana statutes, rules and regulations.
Working Conditions
* Works in a physician office/hospital environment.* Requires flexible schedule to work extended hours when required and provide on-call emergency support.
Physical Demands
* Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e., to remain on feet and walk for long periods of time, ability to push wheelchairs and carts, to lift or pull patients or supplies, to provide CPR, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position.
