Day Kimball Health is hiring for a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BFPC) Job for the WIC Department (Part Time Day Shift), in Putnam, CT.

The WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BFPC) is a paraprofessional support person who gives basic breastfeeding information and encouragement to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. As the WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BFPC), you will support breastfeeding mothers through varied modalities such as phone contact, support groups, one on one counseling, assist with prenatal classes and breastfeeding groups, and participate in participate community education with WIC and breastfeeding support groups.

Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Job Responsibilities:

* Is enthusiastic about breastfeeding and wants to help other mothers enjoy a positive experience.* Has a telephone and is willing to make phone calls from home. Has reliable transportation.* Receives a caseload of WIC mothers and makes routine periodic contacts with all mothers assigned.* Gives basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers, including telling them about the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers, and getting a good start with breastfeeding. She also helps mothers prevent and handle common breastfeeding concerns.* Counsels WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by telephone, home visits, and/or hospital visits at scheduled intervals determined by the local WIC Program.* Refers mothers, according to clinic-established protocols, to:* WIC nutritionist or breastfeeding coordinator* Lactation consultant* Mother's physician or nurse* Public health programs in the community* Social services agencies

Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Education and Experience Requirements:

* High school diploma required.* Has breast fed at least one baby. Has Participated in the WIC Program as a client.

Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* Must be able to maintain confidentiality in a professional manner.* Demonstrates competency in utilizing resources to accommodate cultural needs of patients and customers such as dietary, religious and language needs.* Demonstrates efforts to maintain and improve job specific competencies. Incorporates new knowledge into practice.* Remains flexible in work schedule in order to provide the most effective and efficient support for the department and hospital mission.* Demonstrates the ability to follow appropriate procedures/production techniques related to the care of patients from 5 months to 105 years.* Demonstrates knowledge and application of principles of fire safety, hazardous communication program, standard precautions, infection control, and general safety.
