General Statement of Duties
Forsyth County Department of Public Health has an opening for a Public Health Nurse II. This 10-month EC School Health Nurse position is responsible for enhancing the educational experience of students by removing or modifying health-related barriers to learning by providing specialized, professional level nursing care to participants in the School Health Program. This nurse works with children with special needs, and is responsible for assessing the children, formulating plans of care, carrying out these care plans, training staff members how to carry out the care plans, and providing on-going monitoring of the children's care. The goal is to provide the optimal education experience for the special needs child based on his/her needs and abilities. This is a 10-month position.
All Public Health School Nurses may be required to work 2-4 Saturday immunization clinics per year to increase vaccine compliance rates for students within the Winston Salem Forsyth County Schools and may be required to provide emergency response in the event of an emergent Public Health situation.
10 month nurses will be off during the summer months and this time is unpaid.

Considerable knowledge of and skill in the application of nursing theory, practices, principles,and techniques employed in the field of public health and related programs;
Working knowledge of and the ability to apply the principles and practices of public health;
Working knowledge of current social and economic problems relating to public health;
Knowledge of available resources and organizations in the community;
Ability to record accurately the services rendered and to interpret and explain records, reports,and medical instructions;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees;
Ability to deal tactfully with others and to exercise good judgment in appraising situations andmaking decisions and;
Ability to secure the cooperation of clients, to elicit needed information, and to maintaineffective working relationships.
Minimum Education and Experience
Graduation from a four year college or university with a B.S. Degree in Nursing which includes a public health nursing rotation and one year of professional nursing experience in specialty area; or
Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing and two years of professional nursing experience in specialty area assigned.
Must be licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement.
Individuals hired without a rotation through a public health department as part of educational requirement will be required to complete Introduction to the Public Health Nursing course within one year of hire.
Drivers License is required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Checking and monitoring the immunization status of students;
Implementing emergency care plans and developing, teaching and monitoring plans of care for students with special health needs;
Teaching and monitoring school staff members in the daily administration and documentation of medications and;
Assist with staff education, vision/hearing screenings and other school nurse duties as assigned/needed and;
Assisting in the investigation and monitoring of communicable diseases in the assigned schools and other areas of Forsyth County.
