Primary Purpose:
To enhance the collaboration between Health Services and Special Education by providing comprehensive and coordinated care for early childhood special education students and students requiring one-to-one nursing care.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
* Bachelor's degree or nursing degree from an accredited college or university * Valid registered nurse (RN) or advance practice RN license from the Texas Board of Nursing * Current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)/AED * If not already complete, must agree to complete BSN within three years
Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
* Knowledge of health appraisal to identify student health defects * Ability to implement policies and procedures * Knowledge of basic first aid * Proficient keyboarding and file maintenance skills * Ability to write routine reports and correspondence * Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Experience:
* Three (3) years of nursing experience in pediatrics, outpatient clinics, or school health clinics preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Nursing Services
* Provide direct care to students using professional assessment skills and the nursing process. * Administer medications, manage medical equipment, and perform necessary medical procedures according to individualized healthcare plans (IHPs). * Develop and implement IHPs for medically fragile students and those in early childhood programs, evaluating outcomes to ensure safe and effective integration into the school environment. Regularly review and update these plans in collaboration with special education staff. * Conduct assessments and hearing and vision screenings to evaluate student * Educate special education staff and one-to-one nurse on specific health conditions, emergency procedures, and individualized health care plans. * Serve as a liaison between families, doctors, and the school, providing updates on students health and coordinating care plans. * Evaluate the effectiveness of health care services provided to special education students and recommend improvements. * Support compliance of School Health and Related Services with 1-to-1 nurse * Serve as health advocate for * May make home visits to help with student health problems as
Instruction
* Participate in development of district health education curriculum, educate faculty and staff as needed on health related topics, and provide health education to individuals and groups including contributing to campus communications to parents and the local community regarding health issues.
Consultation
* Collaborate closely with District Lead Nurse, Health Services Specialist, and other staff to provide leadership to ensure a healthy school environment. * Participate in Admission, Dismissal, and Review (ARD) meetings and Early Childhood Assessment Teams (ECAT) assessments to provide medical insights and collaborate on student care plans.
Administration
* Work with District Lead Nurse to develop and coordinate continuing evaluation of campus health program and make changes based on Develop and recommend campus policies and procedures to promote the health and wellness of students and staff. * Supervise, train, and participate in evaluating LVNs, unlicensed diabetes care assistants, other unlicensed assistive personnel, or other school personnel who have responsibility for assisting students with health needs. * Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required, including clinic records and accurate and confidential student health records such as immunization records, medication administration records, individual student treatment records, and IHPs. * Maintain and document student procedures/medications, etc. that are required for District SHARS reimbursement and submits forms to designated personnel. * Administer aide as needed for staff members and work with Risk Management as needed for Workers' Compensation involving employee injuries. * Requisition supplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic * Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health rule, State Board of Education rule, and board policy. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations. * Report potential health and safety hazards to District Lead
Professional Development
* Maintain professional nursing skills and knowledge as required by the Texas Nurse Practice Act and the Texas Board of Nursing including certification for mandated screenings and Basic Life Support for Healthcare providers (CPR/AED).

Motion: Frequent walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension
Lifting: Moderate lifting and carrying (up to 15 pounds); May require regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and position of students with physical disabilities; controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting non-ambulatory students
