Job description

Under minimal supervision, The WIC Lactation Peer Counselor (LPC) supports parents in the WIC program by providing guidance and encouragement related to breastfeeding, chest feeding, and pumping. They conduct one-on-one counseling sharing personal experiences to build trust and promote positive nursing practices. Collaborating with WIC staff, IBCLC and healthcare providers, the counselor addresses challenges and offers practical advice to ensure success of the individualized goals of the pregnant and nursing parent.

Job qualificationsAttends breastfeeding training classes to become a peer counselorGives basic breastfeeding information and support to new parents, including telling them about the benefits of breastfeeding, chest feeding, pumping, overcoming common barriers, and getting a good start with nursing. Lactation Peer Counselor (LPC ) also helps parents prevent and handle common lactation concerns.Provide personalized support to WIC Participants regarding nursing and pumping practices, challenges, and solutions.Help WIC participant set achievable breastfeeding goals and develop strategies to reach themFoster a welcoming and non-judgmental space for parents to discuss their nursing and pumping journeys.Counsels WIC pregnant and nursing parents by telephone, text, email and virtual meetings at scheduled intervals determined by the local WIC ProgramRegularly check in with clients to monitor their progress and offer ongoing support and encouragement.Maintain accurate records of client interactions, progress, and feedback in accordance with WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor program guidelines.Engage in continuous education to remain updated on lactation best practices and guidelines.Attends monthly staff meetings and breastfeeding conferences/workshops as appropriateMay assist WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling through special projects and duties as assignedTravel to multiple locations as needed or requestedUnderstand scope of practice and when yield and refer to IBCLC and healthcare providers
