Position SummaryThis position is for an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) (i.e., acute care nurse practitioner or physician assistant) to join a vibrant and cohesive APP group, working alongside Washington University School of Medicine Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine faculty and fellows, to provide medical care to patients in the Medical Intensive Care Unit and the Stem Cell Transplant and Oncology Intensive Care Unit at Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJH). A full-time position is three 12-hour shifts per week with approximately 33% of shifts as nighttime coverage. The APP will work under physician oversight as required by state regulation, and function within the scope of practice defined by their certification, BJH medical by-laws, and collaborative practice agreements.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

Provides direct patient care services in an intensive care unit setting, including:Obtain patient history.Perform physical examination and re-assessments.Order and interpret diagnostic tests, such as x-rays, EKGs, and laboratory studies.Directly treat and manage acute and chronic disease conditions, such as shock, sepsis, gastrointestinal bleeding, acute respiratory failure, acute kidney failure, decompensated liver failure, hematological emergencies, and other critical illnesses requiring intensive care.Develop and implement a patient-centered plan of care in collaboration with the patient and/or next of kin, physicians, nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, and other ancillary care providers, as clinically indicated.Perform diagnostic or therapeutic procedures under the supervision or authorization of a physician, such as insertion of arterial lines and central venous catheters, consistent with certification, credentialing, and state regulations.Discuss patient care with consultants, emergency department providers, and hospital medicine providers.Prescribe medications and therapies to manage health conditions according to certification, credentialing, and state regulations.Counsel and educate patients and their families/caregivers concerning diagnoses, treatment options, palliative care, and end-of-life planning, as clinically indicated.Triage patients needing admission to the intensive care unit.Document assessment, exams, and test findings in the patient's electronic health record.Participate in rounds on assigned patients.Maintain a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients/families in accordance with established clinic/hospital standards.Work in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, and safety, environmental, and infection control standards.Enhance professional growth and development through educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops, and/or attendance at national conferences.

Salary RangeBase pay is commensurate with experience.

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University.
