TITLE: Classroom Paraprofessional

QUALIFICATIONS: Valid paraprofessional license issued by the State of Illinois and registered in Region 07 South Cook ISC4

JOB SUMMARY: To work closely with individuals or small groups of exceptional students on a regular basis in an effort to provide them with an environment in which they can take full advantage of the instructional program.

REPORTS TO: Classroom Teacher, Principal, and other administrators.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary based on Chicago Heights School District 170 and American Federation of Teachers, AFT Local 604, Chicago Heights Council contractual agreement.

PENSION SYSTEM: IMRF

RESPONSIBILITIES:Assists the student(s) to whom assigned in such physical tasks as putting on and taking off of outerwear, moving from room to room, using the lavatory, toileting assistance, and so on.Hears the student(s) in recitation, reading, and other curriculum tasks, guiding and helping them but not teaching them.Performs simple errands and tasks for student(s) such as sharpening pencils, carrying lunch trays, etc. if appropriate.Works with small groups of students to reinforce material introduced by the teacher under the teacher's supervision.Accompanies the student(s) to the office or to other areas of the building if appropriate.Establishes as fully as possible a supportive and sympathetic relationship with the student(s) without fostering or encouraging intense emotional involvement.Serve as a resource person to the student personnel evaluation team conferring about one of the student(s) if requested.Participates in special education in-service training.Understands the role of the special education support staff.Facilitates the integration of the special education student(s) into the regular classroom.Understands the requirements of P.L. 94-142 and state special education legislation.Understands student and parent due process.Establishes cooperative relationships with other staff members within the general education program.Helps to modify classroom materials/equipment if necessary.Helps the teacher maintain limits which define or structure a situation in a positive manner.Cooperates with the teacher to implement creative, positive solutions to problems.Helps the children to develop appropriate personal and interpersonal skills.Develops a flexible attitude and approach towards classroom situations.Shows a genuine concern and respect for the students.Assists the teacher in coordinating general classroom activities.Facilitates interaction between all students.Checks workbooks, corrects papers and helps in supervising testing and makeup work.Helps to supervise the loading and unloading of buses.Lifts and relocates student(s)/equipment as needed.Assists with self help and self care skills.Sanitizes materials/equipment in accordance with board policy.Carries out other appropriate activities as assigned by the teacher.
