Description
Performs basic and advanced life support, stabilization procedures, and emergency medical care at the paramedic level of training and certification and performs equipment operation duties on a twenty-four hour shift providing EMS services for the County. Provides Paramedic level of emergency medical care, and providing emergency medical transport to medical facilities. Employees perform work including assuring that quality emergency patient care standards are in place, proper equipment and treatment are available, and sound judgment and treatment decisions are made.Examples of Duties
EssentialProvides responses to emergency calls and ambulance requests; operates emergency medical equipment, as certified; serves as team leader as needed on emergency medical truck. Completes necessary records and reports for emergency calls including information for billing documentation, and legal accountability.
Assists with daily cleaning and inventorying of emergency equipment, supplies, fluids, administration sets and drugs. Reports facility maintenance, radio, vehicle and equipment problems to appropriate level of authority. Participates in cleaning and maintaining ambulance, equipment, station house and premises. Performs patient assessment, basic and advanced life support treatment in accordance with protocols established by the department and the County's Medical Director; as certified, draws blood, administers approved medications; initiates intravenous fluids; performs pulmonary ventilations; administers CPR; provides airway management and cardiopulmonary resuscitation; oxygen administration; hemorrhage control; treatment for shock; bandaging and dressing injuries and splinting of fractures and dislocations; treatment of injuries to various parts of the body; provision of basic/advanced life support for medical injuries, assisting in normal and abnormal childbirth, treatment of injuries and burns; lifting and moving patients for transfer to a medical facility.
Transports patients to local and regional medical facilities, maintaining contact with medical staff while in transport and assuring care of patient.
AdditionalAttends in-service classes to maintain current knowledge of emergency medical technology and procedures. Attends staff meeting and committee meetings as required. Performs related duties as required.
Typical Qualifications
Graduation from high school and some experience as a Paramedic; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have a valid driver's license.
Special RequirementsNorth Carolina Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic certification.North Carolina Hazardous Material Level I certification.North Carolina Emergency Vehicle Driver certification.ACLS, PALS or PEEP, BCLS, ITLS certifications.Supplemental Information
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift objects.
Must possess the visual acuity to operate mobile equipment, monitor work site progress, and use measurement devices.

HealthWe offer a high-deductible health plan with a $3000 deductible (Single). This program includes a Health Savings Account (HSA). Employee only coverage is completely funded by the County, PLUS the County contributes $1000 to the HSA annually.
DentalOur dental plan provides for preventive services, such as cleanings each year, at 100%. There is a $25 deductible for other services. Basic services pays at 80% and other major services at 50%. The County contributes $14.47 per month for employee coverage.
Voluntary PlansEmployees may choose from a variety of plans arranged through Mark III Benefits. These include AFLAC Accident, Critical Illness and Hospital Indemnity plans; Allstate Cancer; Texas Life Whole Life; and Superior Vision plans. In addition we offer Short-term and Long-term disability.
Life InsuranceThe County provides $10,000 Basic Life insurance for employees. An employee may choose to purchase additional voluntary term life insurance.
RetirementPension is offered through the N.C. Local Government Employees' Retirement System. Employees are required to contribute 6% of gross wages toward their account. The County also contributes at 7.58% (law enforcement 8.25%).
401(k) and 457 are supplemental retirement plans administered by Empower. For the 401(k) plan, employees contributing a minimum of 1% are eligible for the County contribution of 2.5% toward their account. Employees contributing at least 3% or greater are eligible for a County Contribution of 3%. Law Enforcement Officers receive a 5% County contribution. The 401(k) plan offers both pre-tax and Roth after-tax contributions. The 457 plan is tax-deferred with no minimum contribution requirements.
Longevity PayThe County offers longevity pay to employees with at least 5 years of continuous service.
