Position Summary
We are seeking a motivated and passionate graduate student for an exciting summer internship opportunity in the field of oncology deep learning. The intern will join the Imaging AI team, part of the Informatics and Predictive Sciences (IPS) organization under Research and Early Development. The Imaging AI team develops and applies digital pathology workflows across research, impacting patient therapies from early discovery all the way to late-stage clinical trial analyses, across our disease portfolio. In this internship, the applicant will focus on deep learning enabled methods for cell detection and classification in digitized histology slides (i.e., hematoxylin and eosin/H&E) of human cancer samples. This project is critical for advancing precision medicine and understanding the tumor microenvironment in oncology. The intern will collaborate with experts, work on advanced machine learning models, and contribute to automating and improving histopathological image analysis.
As part of the Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) Intern Program, the internship will provide hands-on experience, access to BMS's computing infrastructure, and opportunities for collaboration with other interns and BMS colleagues. This project offers valuable exposure to deep learning, digital pathology, and innovative applications in oncology research.
Key Responsibilities
* Curate and prepare a cohort of H&E images from BMS's image management system for analysis.* Collaborate with the Imaging AI team to refine and utilize existing machine learning pipelines for histopathological image analysis.* Internalize published models (i.e., CellViT, PatchSorter, PanNuke, etc.) to work on BMS IPS computing infrastructure.* Deploy models on BMS images, evaluate and benchmark resulting cell detection and classification results (accuracy, precision, recall, F1-scores, etc.).* Document all processes and present results in a comprehensive final report and presentation.
Qualifications & Experience
* Graduate student (Ph.D., M.S.) in a relevant field such as Bioinformatics, Biomedical Engineering, Data Science, or similar.* Basic understanding of cancer pathology and tissue structure to effectively interpret results and annotations.* Strong desire to learn basic image processing techniques for H&E images, such as stain normalization.* Proficiency in Python, especially for working with image data and developing simple models.* Basic understanding of deep learning frameworks like PyTorch or TensorFlow, particularly for image analysis tasks, with a willingness to further develop these skills.* Previous experience with digital pathology platforms such as QuPath, Halo, and Visiopharm would be beneficial, though not required.* Experience or willingness to learn how to quantitatively evaluate models using performance metrics like accuracy, precision, and F1-scores.* Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a collaborative environment.
If you come across a role that intrigues you but doesn't perfectly line up with your resume, we encourage you to apply anyway. You could be one step away from work that will transform your life and career.
Uniquely Interesting Work, Life-changing Careers
With a single vision as inspiring as "Transforming patients' lives through science ", every BMS employee plays an integral role in work that goes far beyond ordinary. Each of us is empowered to apply our individual talents and unique perspectives in an inclusive culture, promoting diversity in clinical trials, while our shared values of passion, innovation, urgency, accountability, inclusion and integrity bring out the highest potential of each of our colleagues.
On-site Protocol
BMS has a diverse occupancy structure that determines where an employee is required to conduct their work. This structure includes site-essential, site-by-design, field-based and remote-by-design jobs. The occupancy type that you are assigned is determined by the nature and responsibilities of your role:
Site-essential roles require 100% of shifts onsite at your assigned facility. Site-by-design roles may be eligible for a hybrid work model with at least 50% onsite at your assigned facility. For these roles, onsite presence is considered an essential job function and is critical to collaboration, innovation, productivity, and a positive Company culture. For field-based and remote-by-design roles the ability to physically travel to visit customers, patients or business partners and to attend meetings on behalf of BMS as directed is an essential job function.
BMS is dedicated to ensuring that people with disabilities can excel through a transparent recruitment process, reasonable workplace accommodations/adjustments and ongoing support in their roles. Applicants can request a reasonable workplace accommodation/adjustment prior to accepting a job offer. If you require reasonable accommodations/adjustments in completing this application, or in any part of the recruitment process, direct your inquiries to adastaffingsupport@bms.com.
