Job Statement

The job of the Paraeducator/Special Education Paraeducator is to assist the certificated staff member in the implementation of the Individual Education Plan (IEP) and instructional program in both general education and special education classrooms.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:Be at least eighteen years of age and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent per WAC 179-03-022Associates of Arts Degree or transcript showing at least 72 quarter credits/48 semester credits at an institution of higher education or ETS ParaPro Assessment score report of 461 or higher.Job related experience preferred

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Ability to work with and supervise students, including students with special needs and individuals who are escalatedAbility to physically restrain aggressive studentsAbility to perform satisfactorily the required functions of the job including the ability to communicate effectively (oral and written)Knowledge of working with students with special needsAbility to work independently or as part of a teamAbility to work with and supervise studentsAbility work cooperatively with staff membersAbility to accept responsibility and take directionWord processing

Allowable Substitutions:Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the administration may find acceptable and appropriate

Working Conditions:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 50% sitting, 20% walking, and 30% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities:

This list of essential functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary and without notice.Work directly with students to carry out the instructional and IEP program set up by the certificated staff memberPrepare specified materials or equipment for use in program and classroomReport learning or other difficulties encountered by students to the certificated staff memberPrepare teaching aids as directed by the certificated staff memberOperate instructional equipmentPrepare materials, both academic and non-academic to be used within the classroomImplement with specified students/groups, programs as planned for math, written language, reading and behaviorMonitor students both in and out of the classroomTutor students on a one-to-one basisCollect and record student data and workMaintain confidentially in relationship to the school, program, staff, and studentsThis job position will also be assisting with cookingAbility to lift at least 50 pounds
