UI Heart and Vascular Center is seeking an 80-100% Nurse Clinician to support our Structural Heart Program.
The Structural Heart Nurse Clinician at the University of Iowa Clinic provides specialized care as a clinical expert and care coordinator for patients within the Structural Heart Program collaborating with physicians, patients/families, UIHC staff and health care agencies. Provides education and follow up care to patients undergoing diagnostic and surgical vascular procedures; provide open channels of communication with health care units involved in pre and post care of structural heart patients.

Being a Nurse in the Heart and Vascular Center
Position Responsibilities
* Collaborates with nursing, medical staff and other health professionals in the development and review of standards and in planning, implementing and evaluating patient care for the structural heart patient population with regard to the condition and age of the patient. Provides direct nursing care when necessary. Follows universal precautions.* Oversees structural heart patient's flow through their UIHC continuum of care on the inpatient and outpatient setting. Will participate in inpatient rounding with Structural Heart Team.* Independently coordinates and facilitates patient care between multiple disciplines within both the confines of UIHC and the community (including home health agencies, referring physicians and other community support services). Facilitates continuity of care.* Coordinates patient care to better utilize supportive services through patient visit, pre-schedules testing, follows up with test results to both patient and physician, obtains medical history, coordinates follow up appointments, provides medication and disease process, teaching, etc. Participate in the ongoing management of the patient to facilitate care of patient in a timely manner.* Facilitates care of patients requiring admission, coordinating necessary admission procedures, pre and post procedure care.* Acts as a clinical resource or consultant with regard to the condition and age of the patients.* Participates in implementation and requirements of managed care programs.* Operates autonomously in communicating with members of the health care team directing patient care and providing continuity of care across settings throughout the phases of care.* Autonomously communicates with referring physician and health care facilities.* Revises patient care regime via the telephone within protocols developed collaboratively. Performs telephone triage of patient calls and facilitates medication refills as needed.* Provide cross-coverage to other UI Heart & Vascular Center Nurse Coordinators PRN.* Performs clinical duties, special projects and other tasks as needed.* Provides leadership for direct patient care programs collaborating with health care professionals.* Participates in decision-making process at unit/division/department level of issues that impact clinical practice.* Participates in/provides leadership for divisional, departmental and/or intra institutional and community committees and projects.* Provides input into financial management activities including operational budgetary decisions and cost containment.* Participates in the ongoing implementation of current regulatory standards in order to meet state and national agency accreditation.* Design and implement patient/family health education activities for the Structural Heart patients recognizing individualized need.* Provides patient education in UI Heart and Vascular Clinic that includes:* Assess learning needs of patients and families post-op procedures and provides appropriate education related to diagnosis, procedure performed, risk factor modification, and treatment regimens.* Facilitates learning and provides consultation to those in external agencies, communities and to other health care professionals.* Supports implementation and evaluation of staff education and orientation programs, coordinating and presenting.* Facilitates the educational experience for health care students and monitors the care delivered.
* Incorporates the role of patient care provider, advocate (patient, family, and health care professional), consultant, educator, researcher and quality manager.* Provide assistance with the STS and CathPCI quality database, as well as TVT registry including compiling and entering quality data.* Participates in the development and implementation of division/unit quality assessment and improvement program using appropriate risk and quality management data.* Uses relevant nursing research to improve clinical practice and investigate nursing care problems related to a specific patient population.* Participates in development and conduct of research activities initiated through recognized need in area of specialty and as directed with other disciplines.* Interacts with staff, patients, medical staff, peers, and others in a professional and cooperative manner.* Assumes responsibility for maintaining clinical expertise consistent with patient population requirements and current nursing and medical practice.* Develops management and consultant skills consistent with position responsibilities.* Adheres to professional and legal standards of nursing practice.* Maintains confidentiality of patient and staff information.* Supports a work environment that fosters teamwork and is conducive to the recruitment and retention of staff.* Demonstrates the core values of service leadership: respect, communication, accountability, integrity, and compassion.* Remains calm and constructive in conflict situations, listens and attempts to understand other points of view.* Analyzes own performance in accordance with position expectations, develops goals and implements a plan to meet goals.* Follow general policies and procedures in accordance with the regulations of the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics and the UI Heart & Vascular Center.

Education Requirement
* Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is required.
Experience Requirement
* Reasonable (1-3 years) nursing experience in the care of surgical patients is required.* Demonstrated ability to professionally interact with patients/families, nursing staff and other multi-disciplinary team members required.* Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.* Demonstrated knowledge and clinical expertise in specific clinical area of practice required.
Certification/Licensure Requirement•
* Current certification in BLS required by start date.* Current license to practice nursing in the State of Iowa required by start date.* Current job-related professional certification desired.
Desired Qualifications
* Nursing experience with the management of patients in an outpatient setting and/or experience in caring for cardiothoracic surgery patients, structural heart patients (i.e. TAVR, Mitraclip) and interventional cardiology patients is desired.* Current ACLS certification is desired.* Strong organization and time management skills and documented excellent interpersonal skills with patients, families and health care workers are desired.* Previous experience using EPIC desired.
