JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE OF THE POSITION: Paraprofessional

LOCATION OF THE POSITION: District Schools

REPORTS TO: Transition Coordinator & Special Education Administrators

QUALIFICATIONS:

Highly qualified: 60+ college credit hours or an ISBE teacher's aide certification. Job coach experience and/or training preferred. Valid Illinois driver's license. Experience in a high school setting preferred.

GENERAL DUTIES: To assist in maintaining high quality services for staff, students, parents, and community members who utilize the services assigned to this position. To assist immediate supervisor in carrying out the duties assigned to that position. To strive for positive and collegial public relations with the staff, students, parents and community members. To maintain confidentiality in all areas assigned to this position. To assist administrative supervisors with paperwork and impedimenta so that they may devote maximum attention to the central problems of education and educational administration.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Possess the ability to speak clearly and be understood by others. Possess the ability to write legibly. Possess the ability and have received the training to effectively operate a computer, using a PC platform, at a level which would allow a candidate to pass a test administered for this position. Possess the ability to demonstrate effective telephone skills and the ability to operate a modern phone system. Demonstrate the ability to calmly address individuals using the services offered by the position. Possess an acceptable attendance history in prior positions and demonstrate the ability to meet the daily attendance requirements of the designated position. Possess a successful work history, supported by references, in a work setting similar to the position for which the candidate is applying. Demonstrate the ability to practice confidentiality with sensitive information. Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills to assist in establishing a positive climate in the work environment.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Follow specific instructional strategies and plans to support student learning and independence. Facilitates and supports learners in a variety of settings (e.g. general education classes, community based activities, work experience sites, etc.). Learn essential job tasks required of students to assist learner on job training sites. Demonstrate, monitor, and evaluate student tasks while on the job training site. Participates in field training experiences to enhance learner independence. Helps monitor the delivery of the Individual Education Plans (IEP) in order to accomplish program goals. Participates in collection of assessment data and documentation. Provides individual or small group activity, as prescribed by the supervising teacher. Confers with professionals on a regular basis regarding learner expectations and outcomes and student/program needs. Participates in staff development opportunities.
