The Optum Health Healthcare Economics team leads and influences decision making for the Optum Health line of business. As the Senior Healthcare Economics Consultant, you will be challenged to provide data-driven answers to the toughest problems facing the Optum Health line of business. This position will proactively identify, communicate, and lead organizational dialogue on opportunities and risks throughout the organization, primarily on topics such as medical costs and trends, clinical interventions, and utilization management affordability programs. This position is responsible for researching and investigating key business problems through quantitative analyses of utilization and healthcare cost data. The Senior Healthcare Economics Consultant will drive innovation by creating flexible, Excel-based models to support the ongoing identification of trend drivers and affordability opportunities.
Primary Responsibilities:
Identify, analyze, and explain medical trends using claims-based analyses
Perform data analytics in support of medical expense insights, clinical initiatives, and affordability program development and validation
Apply strong critical thinking and listening skills to anticipate questions from key stakeholders and consider all aspects of an analysis before completion
Research healthcare topics and incorporate findings into data analyses
Use SAS/SQL to construct claims-based datasets
Construct polished MS Excel models to satisfy analytical requests
Provide consistent, timely, and meaningful communications to requestors on project status, results, and conclusions from analyses
Take ownership of ambiguous concepts and completing analysis with limited supervision
Be a creative disrupter with a growth mindset to collaboratively reimagine the way that we operate to generate value

Required Qualifications:
4+ years of applicable corporate experience in data analytics – examining and summarizing data to uncover insights
4+ years of experience in healthcare analytics with extensive and expert knowledge of concepts and methodologies in healthcare environment
4+ years of SAS/SQL experience
Advanced proficiency with MS Excel (practical experience working with pivot tables, advanced formulas, graphs, vlookups)
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with internal customers across multiple departments
Ability to approach issues from broad strategic perspective while also focusing on the details
Proactive problem-solving abilities
Demonstrated track record of developing cross-functional relationships while acting as a SME or department representative
Solid verbal and written communications skills, including ability to present ideas and concepts effectively
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Math, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Economics, or a related degree
Experience with multiple healthcare data types (medical claims, membership, provider, pharmacy, authorization, capitation)

The salary range for this role is $88,000 to $173,200 annually. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
