Associate General Counsel

DescriptionThe Associate General Counsel will support the Vice President for Legal Affairs and the General Counsel on legal issues affecting New College of Florida, primarily dealing with a wide range of employment law matters, working with outside counsel to manage litigation and other agency charges, as well as providing advice on traditional labor law issues.
Examples of Duties
Work on issues specific to higher education, such as public records requests and issues related to Student Affairs, including but not limited to student conduct, student safety and health/wellness, student-focused federal and state regulatory compliance (including FERPA, Title IV, Title VI, Title IX, Clery Act compliance), residential life, Americans with Disability Act and Section 504 compliance, and student activities.
Recommend changes to University policies, procedures, and operations for compliance with legal obligations or mitigation of legal risk, including Labor and Employment, Title IX, Equal Opportunity, Florida Statutes, FERPA, ADA, etc.
Analyze written reports and legal documents and confer with witnesses, experts, investigative personnel, and others for the purpose of obtaining relevant information relating to the litigation of labor and employment matters.
Work with the University’s collective bargaining team and outside bargaining counsel in its relationship with the University’s recognized bargaining units, including preparation of collective bargaining agreements and memoranda of understanding and proper conduct and noticing of meetings.
Work with various stakeholders at the University to advise on legal implications in connection with issues and concerns raised by faculty, staff, and students.
Respond to grievances, complaints, demands, and regulatory inquiries directed to the University.
Develop, draft, and interpret University policies, and provide expert counsel on issues of policy formation and application.
Review labor and employment processes and procedures and training programs for University staff on the same.
Draft and review agreements relating to potential, current, and separating employees to ensure legality and form.
Oversee and ensure the University hiring and separation process is utilizing best practices and in compliance with State and Federal regulations.
Provide strategic relationship management of outside employment counsel on matters for which this role is responsible, including evaluation of outside counsel needs and selection and oversight of outside counsel.
Advise University leadership on new developments and trends within Higher Education regulation, and the impact of court decisions on University administration.
Minimum Qualifications
A Juris Doctorate from a nationally recognized law school.
Five plus years of practice experience within a law firm, government agency, and/or in-house.
Preferred QualificationsLabor and employment law and/or Higher Education Law is highly preferred.
Intellectually curious with an ability to analyze complex situations and respond appropriately.
Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
Skilled in supervising outside counsel in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
Capacity to work with minimal supervision and to handle multiple high priority tasks simultaneously.
Excellent research skills with ability to find, interpret, and apply relevant provisions, regulations, statutes, and court decisions.
Desire to function collaboratively with all levels of University personnel, students, and outside stakeholders.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate easily.
Maintain high ethical standards, particularly honesty, integrity, and reliability.
