05/03/2024Closing Date:Position Summary:The Office of Corporation Counsel (OCC) provides legal services to the City and County through its three main divisions: litigation, counseling, and prosecution. The Deputy Chief Counsel will handle general legal matters for City-County agencies, focusing on complex issues, managing a team of attorneys, and providing legal advice to ensure compliance with laws and standards.Position Responsibilities:Assist with training and supervising assistant corporation counsels and support staff.Represent City-County clients in general legal matters, including preparing contracts and drafting ordinances.Manage a team of counseling attorneys and support staff.Conduct regular check-ins and delegate responsibilities.Advise clients on compliance and legal risk avoidance.Prepare advisory opinions and keep clients informed on legal matters.Skills Required:Strong independent judgment.In-depth knowledge of transactional practice.Strategic vision and leadership ability.Analytical ability and intellectual curiosity.Proficiency in legal writing and oral communication skills.Time management skills and commitment to ethics and professionalism.Qualifications:Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school.Valid license to practice law in Indiana.Proficiency in legal research tools, including Westlaw.At least five years’ experience in the practice of law (may include a judicial clerkship) or two years as a Counseling attorney with the Office of Corporation Counsel.Subject-matter expertise in areas such as contracts, real estate, employment, and land use.Preferred Job Requirements:Five or more years’ experience as a practicing attorney in Indiana.Experience in local government or administrative procedure.Experience in advising, drafting, researching, and counseling clients.
