Position Purpose

* Under the direct supervision of a certified staff member, to assist certified professional staff with students in the classroom to meet instructional goals and objectives, and to free certified professional employees from non-professional duties such as proctoring study halls to enable them to make a contribution to other aspects of the educational program, such as curriculum development.

JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: SPECIAL EDUCATION AIDE (Classroom and 1:1)

QUALIFICATIONS:

* Demonstrated aptitude for the work to be performed

* Minimum of a high school diploma

REPORTS TO:

Classroom Teacher and Building Administration

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the teacher for the purposes of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives and meeting IEP goals.

* Assists with the administration of tests and other assessments for students with special needs.

* Assists and escorts students when necessary for the purpose of attending to the student's personal hygiene and care needs and arrival to/from destinations.

* Communicates with supervising instructional staff, and a variety of health care professionals, and professional support personnel for the purpose of communicating progress and/or implementing IEP objectives/goals.

* Implements, under the supervision of the teacher, modifications and interventions for special needs students.

* Intervenes in potential off task behaviors utilizing appropriate therapeutic approaches for the purpose of diffusing confrontation and minimizing disruptions.

* Assists in maintaining instructional materials and/or curricular materials for students with special needs.

* Supervises individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings for the purpose of providing safe and positive learning environments.

* Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective delivery of instruction to all students.

* Monitors student daily schedule and behavior plan (eg. class schedule, lavatory breaks, snack/lunch, needs for medication)

Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper manner of assistance for all students, including those with disabilities or other special needs.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: This is a 10 month position and salary to be determined on an hourly basis.

EVALUATION:

Job performance will be measured and monitored by building administrator in consultation with supervising teacher(s).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

* Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.* Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, and perform arithmetic operations as needed to assist students.* Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel).* Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.* Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others.* Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with students with special needs.* Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.* Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.* Effective writing and verbal communication skills.

Qualifications Profile

* Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:* High School diploma or equivalent.* Successful completion of college level coursework or passing of examination as required by the No Child Left Behind Act.* Prior experience working with special needs children desirable.
