Amazon Web Services is looking for an Optical Network Development Engineer to support and deploy one of the world’s largest and most complex telecommunication networks. Key job responsibilities

As a Senior Optical Deployment Engineer working within AWS Infrastructure you will:

• Design, build and rollout our global DWDM networks;

• Drive scaling designs to meet the demand of our customers;

• Create processes that help operate and build our optical network;

• Work closely with other Networking teams;

• Evaluate new products and drive commercial tender process;

• Ensure that the optical network adheres to the defined network standards;

• Review and implement changes on the optical systems;

• Drive operational excellence projects to drive improvements in our DWDM network quality and reliability;

• Troubleshoot complex problems and develop innovative solutions day to day on our network.

A day in the life

This role oversees deployment of Long Haul systems and all processes related to those deliverables. It includes the design of the projects, generation of all technical documents, updating internal tools, deployment of systems in the real network and handover for operations. Also the deployment team is responsible to participate in testing new solutions and define technical requirements. Automation is a very important topic in this team to improve the deployment process, reduce the manual activities and make interaction between internal tools.

About the team

The Long Haul Deployment team is responsible for the installation and commissioning of the DWDM systems for Optical Backbone. Our mission is to deliver unconstrained inter-regional transport at the lowest cost, with the most available product conceivable to AWS customers, making it invisible. The team vends capacity to internet backbone customers that provides low latency, high availability and supports features our customers expect.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in a technology related field or equivalent experience to a Bachelor's degree;

8+ years' experience with major DWDM platforms;

5+ years' Experience with optical planning and modelling tools;

Experience with the rollout of large DWDM networks;

Preferred Qualifications

Excellent network analysis fundamentals and robust troubleshooting skills;

Good working knowledge of IP networking fundamentals;

Strong Unix skills;

Ability to script/program in a language are highly desirable;

Knowledge of L2 switching and L3 routing is desirable;

Optical network design, planning and implementation skills;

Team mentoring and technical team leadership experience;

Meets/exceeds Amazon’s leadership principles requirements for this role.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $143,200/year in our lowest geographic market up to $247,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
