Under general supervision of the Director, the Occupational Therapist organizes and conducts occupational therapy programs in the hospital to facilitate rehabilitation of the mentally or physically handicapped. Directs patient participation in selected tasks to restore, reinforce and enhance performance; facilitates the learning of these skills and functions essential for adaptation and productivity, diminish or correct pathology, and to promote and maintain health.Every effort has been made to make this job description as complete as possible. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or is a logical assignment to the position.Evaluate assigned patients, gathering data from a variety of sources, such as patient records, interviews, physical assessment, observation, and team members.Develop treatment plans for assigned patients, including specific goals and treatment modalities. Reevaluate and modify plan at periodic intervals and as necessary. Treat assigned patients and guide individual patients in selection of appropriate activities. Lead specialized activities.Prepare written documentation as required by the profession and the department, such as evaluation results, individualized treatment plans, progress reports, and other such reports.Communicate observations, facts and comments with interdisciplinary team members, individually, and through team meeting presentations.Recommend and develop new services and programs.Provide guidance to less experienced staff members, supervise Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, Technicians, and Aides.Maintain department policies, procedures, objectives, and quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control.Assist with requisitions, care, and maintenance of department equipment and supplies.Attend meetings as required and participate on committee as directed.Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, workshops, etc.Supervises students as assigned.All individuals responsible for the assessment, treatment, or care of patients are competent in the following, as appropriate to the ages of the patients served:
Ability to obtain information and interpret information in terms of the patient’s needs;Knowledge of growth and development; andUnderstanding of the range of treatment needed by these patients.
Maintains patient confidentiality and appropriate handling of PHI.Abides by the HMH Legal Compliance Code of Conduct.Maintains a safe work environment and reports safety concerns appropriately.Performs all other related duties as assigned.LATITUDE, CONTACTS/INTERACTIONSAll positions of Huntsville Memorial Hospital are part of an interdisciplinary team, and as such, participate in the care and service delivery process through effective interaction with other team members. Primarily interacts with hospital staff, medical staff, patients, and visitors.RequirementsEducation: Graduate of a program in occupational therapy required.Experience: None required, prior OT experience preferred.Licensure/Certification: Licensed as an Occupational Therapist required. Basic Life Support certification required within 30 days of employment, before patient care is administered independently.PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:Frequent: lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, standing & walking.Occasional: reaching, bending, squatting, climbing kneeling, twisting.Visual and hearing acuity required.
