Field Safety Lead

The Waymo Safety team works to promote and help to continuously improve the safety of Waymo's fully autonomous driving technology. Our experts develop safety goals and strategies, and conduct safety engineering analyses to ensure safety is being considered throughout the design and development of our vehicles. The team develops and promotes safety strategies and policies for autonomous vehicles for its work with regulatory authorities, lawmakers, law enforcement and public and non-profit organizations. Our Safety Team also helps advise on compliance with applicable environmental, health, and safety regulations.

You will report to the Director of Safety and Incident Management and be based remotely in the United States.

You will:

  1. Lead cross-functional teams in identifying, analyzing, and mitigating issues that may impact the safety of Waymo's active operations. Lead meetings of Waymo's Field Safety Committee to discuss your findings and provide recommendations to senior leadership including CEOs.
  2. Identify opportunities to further improve Waymo's Field Safety processes and deliver on your plans while maintaining alignment with Waymo's Safety Case.
  3. Compile and analyze data from internal sources to address regulatory inquiries and aid in internal safety investigations.
  4. Participate in the Safety On-Call rotation for one week out of every approximately six weeks.

We require:

  1. Senior leader with experience analyzing technology-related safety risks, including ability to quickly identify key issues and bound likelihood and severity. Experience and confidence making safety-critical decisions under uncertainty.
  2. Strong project or program management skills and experience, including ability to lead projects or programs that involve ad hoc cross-functional teams.
  3. Comfort analyzing data, creating data dashboards, etc.
  4. Ability to clearly communicate verbally and in writing with legal and regulatory awareness.
  5. Eagerness to collaborate and network within Waymo, with potential for future external exposure.

We prefer:

  1. Knowledge of AV technology fundamentals.
  2. Experience working with ML or other AI.
  3. Experience working with regulators.

The expected base salary range for this full-time position across US locations is listed below. Actual starting pay will be based on job-related factors, including exact work location, experience, relevant training and education, and skill level. Waymo employees are also eligible to participate in Waymo's discretionary annual bonus program, equity incentive plan, and generous Company benefits program, subject to eligibility requirements.

Salary Range: $240,000 — $302,000 USD
