The Specialty Claims Internship program includes a combination of activities aimed at giving the intern a full understandingof the
Claims

Underwriting
departments and how they interact with other functions within the organization. The program is a potential pathway to a career in insurance. Internships typically consist of a 10-week period over the summer.

ResponsibilitiesWithin the
Claims team , interns will work on meaningful assignments and gain exposure to a variety of claims functions, including claims handling, analysis, investigation, and negotiation. To gain a broader perspective of the business, interns will have the opportunity to meet with individuals who work in other functions within the group. Responsibilities will include:Claim handling assignments including initial coverage analysis, first contact, investigation, and technical writing.Work with the Claims Operations team to request medical canvases, work in the litigation database, and other operations team functions.Learn and perform functions utilizing the various claims systems, programs, and databases.Various reading assignments, self-study courses, case studies, and projects, on a diverse range of topics, providing a foundation of insurance knowledge and overall professional development.Participation in seminars and workshops, including Claims College and Great American University offerings.Participate in special projects within the organization.
Within the
Underwriting team , interns will obtain experience in a variety of underwriting functions, including evaluating and analyzing risk of applicants, insureds, and books of business. Responsibilities will include:Assist underwriters in evaluating and analyzing risk for commercial general liability insurance policies.Conduct research on industry trends, market conditions, and competitor analysis.Support the preparation of underwriting reports and documentation.Participate in team meetings and contribute to discussions on risk assessment and policy development.Collaborate with various departments to gather necessary information for underwriting decisions.Assist in the review and processing of insurance applications and renewals.Learn and utilize underwriting software and tools to support daily tasks.
Networking:Interns will participate in activities with other interns of
Great American Insurance Group , employees, and leaders throughout the organization. In addition to the on-the-job learning that takes place, interns also attend lunch-and-learns to further develop their business knowledge. The interns will also participate in the organization wide Claim Intern Program, meeting regularly with claim interns across the divisions and lines of business.
Qualifications3.5 preferred GPA, with a 3.0 minimum GPA for considerationProven leadership skills through work experience (prior internship/co-ops a plus), campus involvement, and/or extracurricular activitiesSuperior communication, analytical, planning, and organizing skillsSelf-motivated, as the nature of the internship may have virtual aspectsCurrent student in a bachelor’s degree program in a wide range of majors, with Insurance & Risk Management students encouraged to applyMay 2026-2027 graduate preferred but not required
