DESCRIPTIONThis is a skilled journeyman mechanic position in the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment. Work involves servicing and repairing cars, trucks, construction equipment, and other automotive related equipment. Considerable independence in task and accomplishment is expected. Work is performed under the general supervision of a foreman and fleet manager. Work is assigned orally or through work orders.EXAMPLES OF DUTIESDiagnoses problems in electrical, fuel, and hydraulic systems and in various mechanical components.

Repairs and/or rebuilds engines, carburetors, transmissions, differentials, drive lines, brakes, gear boxes, hydraulic systems, and related automotive systems/components for fire service vehicles.

Repairs automotive and truck tires.

Performs routine preventative maintenance work such as oil changes and chassis lubrication on cars, trucks, and construction equipment.

Test drives a variety of vehicles upon completion of repair.

Fabricates and welds with electric and gas welders and makes cuts with gas torch.

Performs field and on-the-road repairs as required in varied weather conditions.

May work extended hours during storm or emergency situations.

Replaces non-repairable items such as shocks, tires, bulbs, and brake shoes.

Operates a variety of test equipment.

Trains other employees and provides a high level of technical expertise.

Diagnoses the more complex problems in electrical and fuel systems and in mechanical components; thoroughly knowledgeable in the use of diagnostic equipment.Designs and modifies equipment.

Replaces or rebuilds components as required.

Regular and predictable attendance is required.

May be asked to quality check work of others.

Occasionally fills a temporary supervisory position in the absence of a foreman.

Performs other work as required.TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONSMust be at least 18 years of age.

Requires high school diploma or equivalent.

Minimum of five years experience as a journeyman automotive mechanic.

With at least one year of experience in heavy truck or construction equipment repair or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Thorough knowledge and experience with principles and repair methods of internal combustion engines (gasoline and diesel), transmissions/drive lines, electrical/fuel systems, and fire apparatus pump systems.

Proven ability to diagnose all automotive related problems.

Ability to read and interpret schematics, service manuals, and manufacturer instructions.

Thorough knowledge of work safety rules and procedures.

Ability to design equipment modifications.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow co-workers, vendors, and public.SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATIONMATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED

Operates hand and power tools, electric and gas welders, and gas cutting torch. Test equipment such as voltmeters, emissions test equipment, pressure testers, engine analyzers, and front-end alignment machine. Operates personal computers and various types of office equipment.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES

This work is performed in the repair shop and in the field under inclement and severe weather working conditions, temperatures range from high (exceeding 90 degrees) to extremely low (sub-zero) temperatures.

Sufficient strength and stamina are required to work for sustained period of time under these conditions. Ability to maneuver in confined spaces to repair and test vehicles and equipment is required. Must be able to lift and carry vehicle components and equipment weighing up to 75 pounds.

Working conditions include close working proximity to moving vehicles, mechanical parts, some exposure to chemicals and heavy equipment. May be subjected to exhaust and other fumes, odors, dust, noise, and vibrations.
