Job Overview:We are looking for a dedicated and detail-oriented Metal Prep/Fitter Helper to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will play a critical part in ensuring that materials are properly prepared for ongoing and upcoming fabrication projects. This includes receiving, cutting, and prepping pipe materials, ensuring they meet the required specifications and are ready for the fitters to continue their work. Key Responsibilities:
Material Preparation:
Receive and organize shop orders, ensuring materials are accurately identified and staged for processing.
Pipe Cutting and Beveling:
Cut pipes of various sizes (2"-60" diameter) from carbon steel and stainless steel (316/304). Bevel pipe ends to prepare for fitting.
Outlets Layout and Cutting:
Perform layout and cutting of pipe outlets, varying in diameter, according to project specifications.
Material Handling:
Safely load and unload pipes, angle bars, and flat bars into the bandsaw and other machinery.
Quality Control:
Ensure all materials are cut and prepared with first-time quality and are released to the fitters without defects or rework.
Tool Operation:
Operate various tools including cutting torches, plasma cutters, bandsaws, and power tools, with a focus on safety and efficiency.
Crane Operation:
Use an overhead crane to move materials around the shop as needed.
Shop Support:
Assist fitters and other team members in ensuring that materials are available and ready for fabrication projects.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
Mathematical Skills:
Strong ability to perform shop-level calculations and convert decimals to fractions.
Measurement Expertise:
Ability to read and interpret measurements using a tape measure and other measuring tools.
Blueprint Reading:
Ability to read and understand shop drawings to determine material requirements and cutting specifications.
Fabrication Knowledge:
Solid understanding of metal and pipe layout, cutting, and fabrication techniques.
Safety Awareness:
Knowledge of the safe operation of power tools, cutting torches, plasma cutters, and overhead cranes.
Physical Stamina:
Ability to stand for long periods and handle physical tasks such as lifting and moving materials.
Basic Metallurgy Knowledge:
Understanding of metal types, properties, and best practices for handling and preparing materials.
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
Previous experience in a metal fabrication shop or a related field.
Certification or training in operating overhead cranes and/or fabrication equipment is a plus.
