Incumbent will create and maintain a safe, positive learning environment to ensure the holistic development of each student and staff member through cultural, social, spiritual, physical and academic experience. Incumbent will support the Bureau of Indian Education's mission, which is to provide high quality education opportunities from early childhood through life while considering a tribe's need for cultural and economic well-being. In performing this mission, the BIE takes into account the spiritual, mental, physical, and cultural aspects of school-aged children within their family and tribal community. To meet its trust responsibility to Indian Tribes, BIE works to strengthen education opportunities for American Indian students to be successful and competitive globally; to enhance student participation in their tribal communities; and support tribes in nation-building, in development of the next generation of tribal leaders.
Responsibilities:
The primary responsibility of this position is to operate school buses in support of the school, but also is required to drive sedans, pickup trucks, and other vehicles as assigned. There are no passenger capacity limitations.
Operates a school bus transporting students to and from school. The school bus routes are normally over both improved and unimproved roads that become very difficult to traverse during inclement weather. Operates a school bus transporting student groups and employees of the school serving as sponsors and/or coaches of the groups to and from extra-curricular activities such as field trips, sporting events, cultural activities, etc., both on and off the reservation.
Operates motor vehicles such as sedans, station wagons, pickup trucks, vans, etc., for the school; performing trips such as picking up mail, supplies, laundry, transporting children to and from medical facilities, etc. Performs operator maintenance checks before and after each trip.
Performs other maintenance and repairs as required such as performing operator maintenance checks before and after each trip, checking and replacing worn fan belts, changing and repairing flat tires, changing oil and filters, cleaning and replacing air filters, etc. Is required to take vehicles assigned to the school to and from garages for repair, turn in, and/or maintenance. Is required to operate a vehicle in performing a variety of chores such as a garage pick-up and disposal, safety checks, etc.
Supervises students on buses/vans and assures the safety of students while being transported. Maintains order among school children on the bus, handles routine misbehavior incidents, and reports any serious behavior incidents using approved school procedures.
Observes established regulations and safety procedures. Completes trip reports and preventative maintenance service records. In case of accident, fills out driver's accident report.
May be assigned to other school areas as needed while not operating the school buses. These areas include: cleanup of outside areas, assisting in the classroom, school cafeteria, or dormitories as necessary.

BASIC EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
High school diploma or GED AND possess valid, current Commercial Drivers' License (CDL).No DWI arrest or conviction within the past two years, no more than one DWI conviction in one's lifetime.
Must meet all applicable state and federal requirements for CDL.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
A valid State Commercial Driver's license (CDL) is required and must be maintained as a condition of employment; failure to do so will result in dismissal from government service.
In accordance with Department of Interior/Indian Affair's Drug Free Workplace Program, all positions with CDL requires are testing designated positions. This position is subject to both pre-employment and random drug testing as a condition of employment. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test is received.
On rare occasions, incumbent may be required to travel away from the duty station for training purposes. Travel may involve transit via airplane and motor vehicle.
Occasionally, the employee is expected to work other than normal hours as necessary to handle emergency situations or peak workloads. Incumbent may also be required to report to work in early morning hours to shovel snow or de-ice in cases of extreme weather conditions. In rare situations reporting to work in inclement weather may be required.
