General Description of Duties and Responsibilities:The Dental Assistant assists the Director of Dentistry, Staff Dentist, and Dental Hygienist in the care and treatment of patients, filing patient charts, updating records, and performing administrative functions.Specific Duties and ResponsibilitiesPatient/Customer Relations:1. Assists the Dentist and Dental Hygienist in chair side duties with patients, including seating the patient and providing appropriate instrumentation and materials for the intended treatment.2. Educates patients on dental disease and preventative home care, including brushing and flossing techniques.3. Serves as liaison to patients in telephone communications of medical/dental issues.Staff Relations/Team Building:1. Consults with the dentist and other members of the health care team as necessary. Acts to facilitate communication between the members of the health care team, including clinical and non-clinical staff.2. Performs other necessary duties as required by the Johnson Health Center and as directed by the Dentist to meet the goal of providing oral health care services.Clinical Duties:1. Prepares dental patients for treatment, including updating and recording of medical and dental history and vital signs.2. Prepares appropriate instrumentation and materials for dental procedures.3. Assists the dentist or dental hygienist in the examination and treatment of patients.4. Provides patient education and instruction in proper oral hygiene techniques and diet to promote dental health.5. Provides post-operative instructions to the patient as prescribed by the dentist or dental hygienist.6. Dismisses patient following treatment and accompanies them to front desk after dentist or hygienist completes dental record.7. Provides the following direct patient care as prescribed by the dentist, or dental hygienist: (a) obtains diagnostic digital x-rays, including bitewings, periapical films, and panorex (b) performs dental prophylaxis (c) applies fluoride varnish treatment (d) places dental sealants, (e) places topical anesthesia, and (f) removes sutures.8. Assists dentist or hygienist, when needed, in medical or dental emergencies.9. Removes instruments after procedures; and cleans, and prepares them for sterilization.10. Autoclave - maintains water levels daily, loads instruments, runs sterilization cycle; then removes sterilized instruments and redistributes to proper locations.11. Keeps operatories stocked w/ appropriate materials and instruments, including ordering supplies as needed to maintain office inventory.12. Cleans operatories and all equipment used according to OSHA standards after each dental procedure.13. Cleans suction lines and traps in operatories on a weekly basis.14. Cleans traps in equipment room every other week.15. Cleans autoclaves and tests sterilization (using Biostrips) monthly.16. Pulls trash from operatories and other clinic areas twice weekly.17. Acts as liaison for patient to convey medical and dental information to and from the dentist or hygienist during treatment-related phone conversations, as well as during clinic visits.18. Assists with the school dental program in all areas of preparation and implementation.19. Assists at front desk, when available, to answer phones, schedule appointments, and receive payment for services.20. Physical attendance is an essential element of the job and necessary to perform the essential functions of the Dental Assistant position.Administrative Duties:1. Performs limited administrative functions involving treatment notes and charting for patient dental records and health histories.2. Assists in performing front office procedures in the absence of the Front Office Specialist including checking in patients, receiving payments and scheduling appointments.3. Assists/coordinates with the school program, marketing, collecting data and preparation as determined by Johnson Health Center.Performance Improvement Activities:1. Attends staff meetings and participates in the Johnson Health Center QI program.Safety/Infection Control Activities:1. Attends all mandatory OSHA infection control seminars, and follows general OSHA guidelines for infection control, including "Universal Precautions."2. Abides by all Johnson Health Center infection control policies, including acute response measures in the setting of a public health concern or disease outbreak.Competencies:1. Works independently as a team member in a fast-paced environment.2. Able to operate office equipment, computer, copier, fax, etc.3. Must demonstrate proficiency with relevant computer programs.4. Able to communicate effectively with both staff and patients.5. Able to multi-task with varied and unrelated duties.Other Functions:1. By focusing on a team-based approach, the expertise of each Johnson Health Center employee is leveraged to optimize the patient experience.Reporting Relationships:The Dental Assistant reports to, is supervised by, and evaluated by the Lead Assistant, who reports to the Director of Dentistry.Evaluation:The evaluation of work performance will be ongoing, and will be carried out by the Lead Assistant or Director of Dentistry. It will include the specific duties and responsibilities of this position description plus employee attitude and general working behavior. Formal evaluation will normally be performed annually, but may be initiated at other times by the Lead Assistant or Director of Dentistry.Qualifications:1. Completion of high school diploma or equivalent.2. Two to five years of previous experience in a dental setting preferred.3. Ability to work well with a team required.4. Working knowledge of MS Office products and general computer usage.5. Excellent organizational skills required.Status:This is an FLSA Non-Exempt position.This is an OSHA high risk position.This is an ADA negotiable position.
