Position Overview
The Human Resources Generalist plays a key role in supporting the effective implementation of HR policies and overseeing a variety of HR functions, including employee relations, benefits administration, compensation planning, labor contract management, and HR compliance. The ideal candidate will have experience in HR operations, union environments, and a commitment to fostering a positive, productive workplace. This role requires a proactive, organized, and detail-oriented individual who thrives in a collaborative environment and is passionate about aligning human resources initiatives with business objectives.
Key Responsibilities
HR Systems & Reporting
Assist in the development and maintenance of HR systems to ensure management has accurate and timely information to make informed decisions.
Prepare and submit regular reports on HR activities, including employee metrics, benefits, and payroll processing.
Represent the organization at personnel hearings and investigations as needed.
Employee Relations & Labor Relations
Serve as a key resource for managers and employees in understanding HR policies, labor laws, and company procedures.
Actively participate in employee relations investigations, addressing concerns, complaints, and disciplinary actions in a fair and consistent manner.
Advise on compliance with labor contracts, including investigating and resolving union grievances, and supporting labor negotiations.
Payroll & Benefits Administration
Support payroll processing, including collaborating with the Payroll department to manage systems such as ADP, Kronos, and SAP.
Administer and manage employee benefits programs, including health insurance, flexible spending accounts, 401(k), and pension plans.
Oversee the coordination of annual open enrollment, process changes in coverage, and reconcile benefit statements with providers.
Compensation & Leave Management
Assist with compensation planning and benefit strategy implementation.
Oversee the management of employee leave programs, including FMLA, sick leave, vacation, and other protected leaves.
Ensure compliance with all applicable leave of absence regulations, both federal and state, and maintain accurate records in the HR system.
Recruitment & Onboarding
Support recruitment efforts by assisting with job postings, interviewing candidates, and coordinating hiring processes.
Facilitate new employee onboarding, including orientation programs that foster a positive company culture and introduce employees to company policies and procedures.
Employee Records & Compliance
Ensure all personnel records are complete, accurate, and comply with retention policies.
Assist in implementing procedures for record retention, protection, retrieval, and disposal.
Ensure compliance with all state, federal, and local labor laws, including OSHA and ADA requirements.
Training & Development
Assist in planning and coordinating employee training programs and development initiatives.
Help facilitate training sessions and lead as needed to improve employee skills and performance.
Support the professional development of HR staff, including mentoring and training new HR clerks.
Safety & Environmental Compliance
Maintain up-to-date safety training certifications, ensuring all safety protocols are followed.
Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and quality system standards (e.g., ISO 14001, ISO 9001, OHSAS 45001).
Support the company’s commitment to safety, environmental compliance, and quality control.
Employee Engagement & Recognition
Coordinate employee engagement initiatives, including recognition programs, to enhance job satisfaction and morale.
Organize employee events that foster a positive company culture and support employee retention.
Qualifications
Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
3–5 years of progressive experience in human resources, with a focus on generalist responsibilities.
SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) or SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) preferred.
3–4 years of experience working in a unionized environment is highly preferred.
Skills & Competencies:
Strong knowledge of HR policies, labor laws, and employee relations.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency with HRIS systems and tools, such as ADP, SAP, or Kronos.
Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with the highest level of integrity.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with an analytical approach to problem-solving.
