OverviewThe Music Director provides leadership for all aspects of VHC’s music ministry. This position works with the pastors, worship team and appropriate committees for planning and leading the music ministry. VHC currently has one worship service per week (Sundays at 11:00 AM) with paid and volunteer singers and volunteer musicians.Schedule:
Schedule can be flexible as needed. The Music Director is required to attend a weekly worship meeting, schedule and attend choir practice (currently held on Sunday mornings) and attend worship services. VHC does not maintain a strict policy for the number of PTO days granted, 21 days is the general rule, including three Sundays.Responsibilities:Serve as primary musician (piano and organ) for worship services. Arrange for substitute and/or adjunct musicians as necessary;Plan and direct choral, instrumental, hymns and service music appropriate to the liturgical season, lectionary, and worship themes, including Good Friday, Christmas Eve, and other special services.Provide service music for weddings and memorial services at the church as requested and/or find adequate substitutes; additional compensation given.Oversee and administer all aspects of church life related to music including musical instrument maintenance;Encourage participation in the music ministry and recruit new participants;Develop and utilize musical talents of members of the congregation;Research and procure new music within approved budget;Facilitate pastoral care as needed for music participants;Attend weekly rehearsals with choir and musicians for worship preparation;Hire and supervise paid singers according to contracts;Attend weekly worship planning meeting;Oversee music budget;Hire outside musicians as necessary within the constraints of the budget;Maintain music library with the assistance of volunteer librarian;Lead church’s compliance with applicable music copyright laws;Input music for publication in weekly PowerPoint presentation according to established deadlines;Qualifications/Requirements:Personable, positive, efficient, self-starter, team builder and team player;Proficiency in organ and piano;Choral Conducting experience;Timely preparation and performance;Ability to manage contract musicians;Ability to shepherd and nurture volunteer musicians;Proficiency and enthusiasm for a wide range of musical styles including traditional mainline protestant hymnody, gospel, contemporary, folk, bluegrass, world music, etc;Producing and directing special events;Commitment to Virginia-Highland Church’s mission, values and vision;Bachelor of Music (or equivalent degree);Post graduate music degree; and/or related job experience preferred;Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a church-related setting preferred.To Apply:Please send
