The Chief Operating Officer – MCVP serves as an advisor and executive resource to the President of Medical College of Virginia Physicians (MCVP). This position supports the senior management team in advancing the mission and interests of MCVP by working with the President MCVP and the entire management team to implement the mission, vision, values, strategies, and goals of MCVP. This position collaborates and enhances partnerships with leadership at all levels of the VCU Health System Authority including MCVP and MCV Hospitals and Clinic, as well as the VCU School of Medicine and other health sciences schools as needed. The Chief Operating Officer presides at MCVP Board meetings in the absence of the Board Chair.
This position supports the President MCVP and plays a key leadership role in ensuring effective, ethical, efficient operations and administration across MCVP. The leader will have responsibility over budgeting, financial management and oversight, and human resources management of MCVP. Assists in the development of, and is responsible for, carrying out goals, objectives, plans, and policies established by the President of MCVP. Performs executive functions that require a thorough knowledge of MCVP policies, procedures, operations, and an understanding of MCVP’s role within the Health System, as well as its essential relationship with the University.
The Chief Operating Officer MCVP executes enterprise-wide strategies that reflect shared priorities for clinical effectiveness and financial performance. This individual effectively manages the overall cost structure of MCVP through the development of effective support management functions and create efficiencies in systems and processes through utilization of continuous improvement processes to ensure effective operations. Modeling leadership and management of best practices, the Chief Operating Officer MCVP executes the mission and core values of the faculty practice plan, MCVP, and works collaboratively with the VCU Health System (VCUHS) Ambulatory clinic leaders and directors. Ensures all policies and procedures under their leadership are compliant with VCUHS, VCU, and all external regulatory organizations that regulate MCVP, School of Medicine (SOM), and VCU.
Essential Job Statements
Serves as a supplemental and senior liaison between the President MCVP and the senior management team and other reports. May represent the President MCVP in internal and external meetings.
Ensures clear, effective, and timely communications between the President and their reports.
Provides day-to-day project management assistance for initiatives primarily directed at the President MCVP.
Works in close collaboration with inpatient and outpatient leadership to ensure effective MCVP operations. Attends MCVP Executive committee meetings as a non-voting member.
Closely coordinates activities with faculty leaders (Department Chairs) and other key clinical influencers, the hospitals, and key external partnerships. On behalf of the President MCVP, integrates with major Health System departments that have essential integrated programs with the MCVP.
Works closely with President MCVP in their dual role as Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs to ensure maximal collaboration between the MCVP and the School of Medicine.
Advises the President MCVP in a timely manner of all critical issues that require attention and decision-making; assembles complete and accurate information, as well as coordinates the thorough analysis of options.
Partners and coordinates activities between the MCVP management team and senior leadership to ensure the effective development of strategic institutional, executive and board priorities and to ensure alignment of institutional efforts and resources with these strategic priorities. Works with the President to ensure coordination of planning in the development of the MCVP's annual and multi-year vision, goals, and agenda.
Provide oversight, expertise, and supervisory oversight for the strategic initiatives of the President.
Authorized to ensure the effective monitoring and accountability functions of major MCVP wide initiatives and institutional operations as a direct representative of the President.
Serve as the President MCVP's liaison to internal and external constituencies as appropriate to the achievement of institutional, executive, and board priorities.
Ensures the effective coordination of appropriate MCVP, Health System, and VCU entities to resolve questions, concerns, issues, crises, and requests coming to the Office of the President MCVP.
Ensure the timely analysis of policy and other local, state, and national issues, identify impacts to MCVP’s market, strategic, and reputational position, and recommend appropriate actions or responses to senior leadership.
Stays well-informed of local, state, and national events and issues and keep the President MCVP informed as these relate to MCVP.
Work closely with the Dean’s cabinet members and specifically with the Sr. Associate Dean for Finance and Administration to seamlessly advance the overlapping missions of MCVP and the SOM.
As the needs of the President MCVP and MCVP may change across time, other duties may be assigned at the President MCVP's discretion.
Minimum Qualifications
Years and Type of Required Experience:
Minimum of ten (10) years of leadership experience in healthcare.
Leadership experience in an Academic medical center, and/or Minimum of five (5) years of senior leadership experience in management of a physician group.
Strong analytical, communication, and organization skills; documented ability to facilitate consensus among diverse constituents; and the ability to work effectively with other executives to achieve business objectives are required.
Proven strategic initiative design and execution.
Strong business skills, including executive presentation skills and business financial acumen.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to interface with all levels and departments effectively on a formal, informal, written and verbal basis.
Strong metrics and analytics experience.
