Department Summary

Infrastructure Services provides flexible, reliable, and secure traditional and cloud infrastructure services (network services, platform services, data center operations and management, and unified communications) enabling connectivity, productivity, and security for UCLA. Infrastructure services strives to optimize performance increasing storage, elevating the network, and reducing downtime. Field Operations supports UCLA’s telecommunication networks including internet telephone cable and on-site services and repairs. Field operations conducts the wiring work on campus to ensure efficacy and safety. This team installs, configures, upgrades, and supports wiring for campus (e.g., pulling fiber underground, installing network wiring for new classrooms/buildings, upgrading old/exposed cables, etc.).

Position Summary

The Cable Specialist is responsible for the installation, repair and maintenance of a variety of network and communications cabling including CAT-3, CAT-5, CAT-6 and fiber optic in support of campus departments or organizations. The Cable Specialist is responsible for voice, data and private line communications services.The Cable Specialist will positively impact UCLA's operations and culture by ensuring UCLA's IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of the university's academic mission. This team member will advance the University's mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across faculty, staff, and students. This role will execute UCLA's vision while modeling UCLA's culture and values.

Qualifications

Experience working in one or more of the following fields: information technology, management, customer service, higher education, or a related field. (Required)Experience in complex higher education environments, serving academic and administrative functions of a large public university (Preferred)Knowledge of the current range of methods, technologies, and equipment associated with the installation, maintenance, repair, and testing of voice, data, and fiber optic cabling; Knowledge and associated skill regarding the installation and maintenance of CAT-3, CAT-5 and CAT-6 cabling. (Required)Skill in the placement, patching, connectorization, and testing of fiber optic cable, including the ability to comprehend fiber circuit design information, assigned coordinates, and connectivity issues with regard to the Campus Backbone. (Required)Knowledge of the installation, testing, and repair issues and parameters associated with special services including 2 and 4 wire private line service, single and multi-point communications lines, and modems etc. (Required)Skill in the appropriate performance of testing and troubleshooting procedures, including Db loss tests for installed circuits and data connectivity from switch to patch panel to faceplate, troubleshooting CBN fiber. (Required)Knowledge of industry safety standards including those involved in working with fiber optic cable, and those pertaining to work in construction sites, small crawl spaces, close to electrical circuitry, and utilizing the variety of installation tools. Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

Bachelor's Degree in one or more of: information technology, computer science, public administration, business administration, communications, or related field, or equivalent combination of experience/training. (Preferred)

Special Conditions for Employment

The anticipated pay range for this position is $33.21 - $40.07 per hour; salary is dependent upon the skills and experience of the selected finalist.NOTE: This position REQUIRES that a RESUME and COVER LETTER be submitted in addition to the application.
