Summary: The Assistant Director of Pharmacy Services supervises and monitors the activities in the hospital pharmacy according to hospital policies, standards of practice of the profession, and State and Federal regulations. This includes various aspects of Pharmacy Services related activities including oversight of pharmacy day-to-day operations, distribution activities to ensure appropriate storage, and ensuring compliance with medication safety practices. The Assistant Director of Pharmacy Services is responsible for planning in support of the Mission and Vision; helping to develop goals and objectives; resource allocation; and customer relations. The Assistant Director is responsible for ensuring that policies are consistently observed, and for the implementation of appropriate policies and procedures. The Assistant Director assists in facilitating compliance with all pertinent Joint Commission Standards, and with local, state and federal regulations. As an integral part of the management team, the Assistant Director is to participate in the organization's Performance Improvement programs and to cooperate with Ballad Health projects to improve quality of service and reduce cost. The Assistant Director practices fiscal responsibility by helping to develop realistic annual operating budgets, conserving resources, and monitoring expenditures to remain within budgeted parameters. Conservation of resources will include the pursuit and implementation of cost effective drug procurement. This position flexes staffing to comply with established productivity standards. The Assistant Director facilitates departmental facilities and equipment regular inspections for optimum operating condition. This position is responsible for maintaining the qualified and competent staff needed to provide quality service. They are also responsible for monitoring the activities of pharmacists and technicians to ensure that ongoing education is completed, including attendance at organization-wide programs. This position will also ensure that team members are treated with dignity, fairness, and consistency, within the guidelines set forth in the Human Resource Policies and Procedures. The Assistant Director assures harmonious interactions between departmental personnel and their customers, including patients, family members, visitors, physicians, clergy, system team members, and the general public. The incumbent must ensure that departmental team members know and understand the Mission and Vision, and uphold its values. The Assistant Director is accountable for maintaining technical expertise and for development of leadership skills through ongoing education. The Assistant Director must be self-motivated and serve as a strong team leader and coach. The Assistant Director's responsibilities include, but may not be limited to, coordinating (for Pharmacy Services): 1. Facilitates inter-departmental coordination and cooperation to identify and address departmental/organizational needs by acting as a liaison between pharmacy and other disciplines. 2. Coordinates Lead Pharmacy Technician duties, projects, and responsibilities 3. Supervision of the technician and pharmacist work to ensure medications are safely dispensed to patients and in compliance with pharmacy policies and standards. 4. Training and utilization of pharmacy applications 5. Fosters effective departmental communication and collaboration 6. Schedules and directs day-to-day operations of the department 8. Collaborates with the Director of Pharmacy on departmental goals and initiatives, annual budgets, expense control, and team member morale and development 9. Participates in payroll review 10. Assumes Pharmacist-in-charge responsibilities in the absence of the Director of Pharmacy and is accountable to applicable State Board of Pharmacy inspections The Assistant Director is expected to comply with the management philosophy which includes being accountable to the customer, fiscally responsible, and focused on improving performance outcomes. Scope of Service provided by Pharmacy Services encompasses neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient groups served and includes the following: - Patient care and monitoring at order entry, via clinical services, and by participation on multidisciplinary teams; - Supporting safe and efficacious use of medications; - Procuring, distributing, and storing of medications appropriately; - Appropriate record keeping; - Interpretation of physician medication orders; - Preparation of medications for oral and/or topical use; - Preparation of parenteral products; - Provision of accurately labeled and dispensed medications in a timely manner; - Assisting in selection of medication therapy; - Provision of medication information/education for physicians, patient care personnel, patients, and others as needed; - Participation in a variety of educational activities for the community, patient care personnel, allied health personnel, medical and pharmacy students, and attending and resident physician staff; - Promotion of cost-effective medication therapy; - Assisting in medication use evaluation (including components of the Medication Use Process: Procuring, Prescribing, Dispensing, Administering, and Monitoring); - Ensuring compliance with state and federal laws and accrediting bodies; - Appropriate use of technology; - Reporting and review of adverse drug events (including adverse drug reactions and medication variances); - Maintaining effective continuous improvement processes; - Assisting with the development and maintenance of medication-related policies and procedures and a medication formulary as a function of the multidisciplinary Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee; - Appropriate interaction with and support of all affiliated institutions.

Requirements: At a minimum, the Assistant Director will possess a Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy and maintain appropriate licensure, including current state pharmacist license. A Master's degree in the same area and/or in a management discipline is preferred. The position requires a minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in healthcare or related field including 2 years in a supervisory role. The incumbent will be required to update technical expertise and to develop management/leadership skills through continuing education throughout tenure in this position.

Licenses and Certifications: Pharmacy License issued by the appropriate state(s) the facility serves.

BLS required, ACLS and/or PALS may be required based upon assigned job duties
