Job Responsibilities

Performs skilled mechanical repairs to electrical and hydraulic systems, repairs to pneumatic systems, small equipment repairs to include chainsaws/weed eaters, body work related to accidents or wear/tear, repairs to tires, field service calls, A/C repairs, preventative maintenance levels, utilizes diagnostic equipment to diagnose mechanical failures. Diagnoses the repairs or replacement of parts on all diesel powered equipment assigned to SCDOT. Performs maintenance and repairs on diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, hydraulic motors, pumps, cylinders, mowing equipment, tractors, motor-graders, rollers and AMZ machines. Performs welding and fabrication as needed for repairs on various equipment making modifications to equipment to improve the production of utilizations. Performs electric welding or gas welding. Responsible for shop safety and cleaning of automotive shop and immediate work area, to include all surrounding areas of shop responsibility. Ensures that all hazardous waste and materials are properly stored and or disposed as per DHEC regulations. Containers must be properly labeled. Performs service calls at field work sites as needed. Assists in maintenance operations during emergencies, (inclement weather, etc.} by providing mechanical assistance as needed. Performs other related duties as assigned.Minimum and Additional Requirements
One and one-half (1.5) years of work experience that involved the independent performance of job duties directly related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Completion of one (1) academic year of a South Carolina High School Automotive Technology or Diesel Engine curriculum may substitute for six (6) months of directly-related experience. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
Physical Requirement: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires working in a large garage setting and may perform duties in an uncomfortable position for long periods of time. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.Additional Comments
