General Statement of Duties
There are currently two full-time R.N. vacancies: One opening on the evening shift (3:30 pm - 11:30 pm) and one opening on the night shift (11:30 pm - 7:30 am).
Job Purpose:
Performs professional work as the second licensed Nurse in a Nursing unit during the day shift, or as the Charge Nurse on the evening and night shifts or as needed on a day shifts. Primarily responsible for the administration of medications and treatments, IV's, drawing blood, relieving the Charge Nurse or Patient Care Coordinator, assisting with the supervision of Nursing Assistants, and assisting with the administrative work of the unit. Reports to a Patient Care Coordinator or Charge Nurse on the unit. Position carries a Blood and Body Fluid Exposure Risk Level I.
Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college, university, or hospital training program as a Registered Nurse plus 18 months of Nursing (RN or LPN experience) in a SNF convalescent or nursing home, hospital or related health care facility.
SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess Connecticut RN License at time of application.
Must possess current CPR certification or be able to obtain this certification within 6 months of appointment.
Qualifications:
Considerable knowledge of geriatric nursing and geriatric pharmacology for geriatric residents.
Skilled in the use of CPR.
Ability to provide skilled Nursing care based upon scientific principles, basic behavioral concepts and intelligent professional judgment.
Ability to provide correct application of prescribed medicines.
Ability to communicate effectively and possess clinical competency.
Ability to utilize all equipment related to geriatric nursing care and pharmacology.
Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, including physical restraint, CPR and patient care.
Ability to accept and constructively utilize supervision.
Ability to recognize the needs and concerns of others and to maintain a constructive relationship when dealing with them.
Ability to work effectively and courteously with supervisors, co-workers, facility residents, and the public.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Utilizes professional judgment in evaluating residents, staff and unit needs, and in working to improve care and the quality of life for the residents on the unit to which they have been assigned.
Administers medication to all residents on the unit, following the policies and procedures of the institution; accurately records all medications given, and notes those which have been withheld.
Completes all treatments as ordered by the physician; provides accurate documentation for procedures performed, reviews resident's condition and care plan.
Reports to the Nurse in charge, any significant changes noted in a resident, together with his/her professional assessment of the reasons for the change.
Maintains inter-departmental communication regarding all aspects of patient care, participates in patient care meetings as needed.
Performs physical care of residents based upon their needs, staffing needs or in order to provide training and motivation to Nursing Assistants.
Provides on-the-job training to Licensed Practical Nurses and Nursing Assistants as requested or needed; documents education provided. Participates in orienting new staff to unit and facility routines.
Assists in charting and preparing required documentation regarding residents on the unit; confers with resident's family regarding resident's condition or concerns. Maintains records and forms as required, including Medicare forms and reports. Provides resident and family education regarding health issues; documents education content provided.
Maintains an awareness of potential environmental factors related to safety, infection control, and quality of life, and acts to correct deficiencies promptly when possible, or reports the problem to the appropriate person for correction, informing the Charge Nurse of problems and needs promptly.
Assists Charge Nurse in making unit rounds; reports findings to the nurse in charge; assumes full responsibility for charge duties on evenings and nights or when Charge Nurse is off-duty.
Knows and supports the policies of the institution and other governing authorities, i.e., Town, State, and Federal.
May work with health care students and their advisors when doing field work in the facility.
May participate in in-service education programs and specific committees, performing studies involving other units, as assigned.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
