SUMMARY

The American Mathematical Society’s senior most diversity officer is charged with leading the development and implementation of strategies that aid the organization in fulfilling its commitments in equity, diversity, and inclusion in the broader mathematical community and within the organization. The senior diversity officer will work collaboratively with multiple groups to achieve equitable outcomes and champion all mathematicians. The senior diversity officer must have the demonstrated skills to examine and reform policies and programs to champion all mathematicians, develop and implement strategies that help foster a sense of belonging among all mathematicians and create a more inclusive mathematics community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement a comprehensive equity, diversity, and inclusion strategy (EDI) that aligns with the Society’s mission and goals.

Program Development: Design and oversee programs that promote EDI within the organization, including training, workshops, and outreach initiatives aimed at increasing member engagement and participation from underrepresented groups.

Policy Advocacy: Collaborate with organizational and governance leadership to assess current policies and practices, making recommendations for improvements to ensure equity and inclusivity across all operational areas.

Data Analysis: Establish metrics to measure the effectiveness of EDI initiatives. Regularly analyze data and provide reports to senior leadership and the board to track progress and inform decision-making.

Community Engagement: Build and maintain relationships with diverse communities, organizations, and stakeholders to enhance outreach efforts and ensure the organization’s initiatives are responsive to the needs of all members.

Training and Development: Create and facilitate training sessions for staff and board members on EDI topics, fostering a culture of awareness and sensitivity throughout the organization.

Communication: Serve as the primary spokesperson for EDI efforts, both internally and externally. Collaborate with communications and marketing as well as membership teams to develop communication strategies to promote initiatives and successes related to diversity and inclusion.

Collaboration: Work closely with various departments, including HR, membership, publishing, and communications and marketing, to integrate EDI principles into all aspects of the organization.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This role supervises the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion and to advancing these values in professional practice.

Significant leadership and administrative experience in the areas of diversity, equity, and/or inclusion.

Demonstrated experience leading and managing a team, including hiring, mentoring, and supporting professional development within an equity, diversity, and inclusion-focused context.

Demonstrated experience supporting, developing, and/or leading programs that help historically-excluded and/or underrepresented groups succeed.

Demonstrated experience shifting policies, practices, and programs to address inequities, reduce barriers, and bolster inclusivity and/or participation among diverse groups.

Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development and personal growth in the many facets of equity, diversity, and inclusion, especially within a mathematical or other scientific environment.

Familiarity with using data to support equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts over time.

Familiarity with careers and PhD programs in the mathematical sciences.

A doctoral degree in the mathematical sciences or a closely related field.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Duties performed cause light fatigue of eyes, fingers, or other faculties due to long periods of standing, sitting or repetitive motion.

Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other devices.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS:

Typical office environment, climate-controlled, minimal noise.

Performing primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and lifting up to 40 lbs.

Extended work hours may be required to meet project deadlines or resolve unexpected problems.

Must be able to travel (domestically and perhaps internationally) to meetings and conferences (1-2 weeks of travel per year).

This position is required to be in-office with hybrid potential.
