Our Surgical Physician Assistant will provide high quality, efficient, team-based patient focused care under the direction of a board-certified physician. The Surgical Physician Assistant will assess, diagnose, and implement the medical care of patients in collaboration with the physicians. They are clinically responsible for the provision, coordination, and assurance of comprehensive medical /surgical care using sound medical/surgical knowledge and pertinent standards of care. Finally, in surgeries they typically assist surgeons by performing physical examinations on patients, handing tools and necessary items, closing incisions, and even maintaining the cleanliness of operating rooms while adhering to Cedars-Sinai's health and safety regulations.
Performs first assist during surgical procedures, including robotic procedures, start IV's, and/or perform suturing under direct supervision of the supervising physician and in accordance with scope of practice requirements. Assists in the positioning, skin preparation, and draping of the patient. Provides hemostasis and wound exposure, handles tissue appropriately to reduce the potential for injury, sutures tissue, and applies dressings to the wound under the direction of the surgeon.
Examines patients, performs comprehensive physical examination, and preoperative history, orders diagnostic tests, reviews results and compiles patient medical data, including health history and results of physical examinations. Reports to the surgeon as needed, all in a timely manner.
Provides medical consultation including the performance of therapeutic procedures delegated by the supervising physician, assist with various procedures, treatment and follow-up, may complete daily rounds and as needed using an organized multi-disciplinary team approach to provide continuity of care throughout the care continuum.
Communicates to and guides staff in structuring/relaying information regarding patient diagnosis, management plan, and progress to the patient/client/family and the interdisciplinary team. Assures continuity of care.
Facilitates patient discharge; dictates discharge and transfer summaries in a timely manner. Respond to inquiries, discussing important matters such as treatment options, prescribing or administering medicine, and provides patient education.
Writes orders with respect to patient care under the direction of the supervising physician.
Documents patient care services within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR); and when within their scope of practice and active medical privileges, perform surgical procedures.
Participates in research and educational activities that will enhance professional development including attending continuing education programs relevant to area of practice and participating in professional organizations.
Works with interdisciplinary team to revise and maintain relevant policies, protocols, standards and processes.
Identifies and implements cost-saving activities (e.g., early, but appropriate discharge, clinical practice given at reduced costs, product evaluation, nursing practice changes, etc.).
Assesses quality of patient care delivery and identifies opportunities for changes in practice, rooted in evidence-based standards of care/protocols, which promote positive patient outcomes.
Initiates emergency resuscitation and stabilization as necessary in compliance with hospital safety regulations and infection control.
Performs other duties as determined collaboratively by the supervising physicians that are within the scope of practice of a physician assistant and the health care institution's policies.
* This is a 5/8’s position, Monday through Friday
** There are no calls or weekends
Qualifications
Educational Requirements:
Master of Science Degree in Physician Assistant studies
Bachelor's Degree Graduate from an approved PA program
License/Certification requirements:
National Certification as a Physician Assistant
BLS and ACLS Certification from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association required
Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) certification required
Experience:
Minimum one (1) year Physician Assistant experience in a relevant clinical area strongly preferred, e.g., general surgery, reconstructive surgery, or other surgical specialties is strongly preferred.
This position requires a strong, highly motivated individual who has a very strong focus on patient care, excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure.
Robotics experience a BIG PLUS.
