Fire Marshall Job Description City of Yazoo CityDEFINITION:Under the direction of the Fire Chief and Assistant Fire Chief, incumbent directs the overall activities of the enforcement of State laws, Municipal laws in the field of fire prevention, fire investigation and fire inspection.SUPERVISON RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

:Directly reports to the Assistant Fire ChiefReceives general supervision and administrative direction from the Fire ChiefEXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT RESPONSIBLITIES AND DUTIES

:Preservation of life, safety and property conservation of the citizens and surrounding areasPlans schedules of inspections of structural buildings, based on code enforcement rules and regulationsMay inspect facilities for code violations and submit code of complianceManages and recommends implementing goals, objectives and practices for providing effective and efficient fire and life safety servicesEstablishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with community and business ownersPerforms constructive feedback to improve fire prevention standardsExplains technical information in a way that is understood by those who need to knowWrites descriptive reports that describe in concise and objective terms what was observedWrites reports that presents data in a logical and clear manner, and the reasons for recommendationsInspect fire scenes after fire extinguished to determine probable cause of fire and observe any indication of possible arsonInterview owners, employees or other to determine facts surrounding firePrepare reports on suspicious fires for further studyOther duties as assigned.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESKNOWLEDGE:Pertinent federal, State and City of Yazoo Ordinances, rules and regulationsCompletion of Mississippi State Fire AcademyState Certification in Fire InspectionFirefighting and rescue operations in the removal of endangered occupants andtreatment of injuredPractice and procedures for fire suppression, inspections, pre-emergency planning, hydrant testing and maintenancePublic safety education, fire origins and determinationsPertinent laws and codes governing fire suppression regulationsCurrent fire apparatus capabilities and the resolution of problems associated with the malfunction or lack of function for fire suppressionDepartment policies and procedures regarding work performance and standardsTechnical and administrative aspects of fire prevention and emergency servicesInterpretation and analysis of fire scene cause and effectDepartment policies and procedures regarding work performance and standardsSKILLS AND ABILITIES:Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to make reports and keep recordsCompetence in computer applicationsExtensive knowledge of the overall operations of the City of Yazoo including policies, procedures, and ordinancesAbility to remain calm and to follow up when under pressure and or in anemergencyAbility to control personal feelings and to demonstrate 'respect to others involvedin fire inspections or investigationsAbility to stay calm in stressful and emergency situationsAbility to explain reasons for action so that all will cooperateAbility to establish and maintain cooperative working and business relationshipswith community and departmentAbility to speak clearly at all times, but particularly when under pressureAbility to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted during workAbility to understand verbal communications from othersAbility to interpret written messages and/or dispatchesAbility to read maps to locate addresses, citizensAbility to raising ladders, carrying equipment and or people of fifty pounds or more, stretching, climbing on truck and or locationEXPERIENCE & GUIDELINES:High School Diploma/GEDCompletion State Fire Academy certificationState Certification in Fire InspectionMinimum five years of experience in fire safety which has afforded progressively responsible experience in a variety of fire functions, supplemented by formal training in fire science, and methods of fire preventionAny combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is acceptablePosition requires physical abilities of sitting, standing, reaching, bending and flexible use of hands and wrists for periods of time, including visual acuity and listening skillsThe above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this job.
