*SUMMARY: * The position of Senior Accountant is responsible for routine processing of accounting, analysis, and financial reporting including monthly financials, the F196 and Notes to the Financial Statement. This position directly supports the district Controller in ensuring accurate and timely accounting processes.
The Senior Accountant recognizes problems, develops audit processes, oversees accurate reporting within assigned areas; works effectively, independently, and follows through on assignments; promotes and maintains a team environment; works effectively with stakeholders both inside and outside the district; communicates verbally and in writing; reads, interprets, and applies processes and procedures.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive. • Implement the school district's accounting system in accordance with the state and district accounting guidance. Ensure legality, accuracy and proper recording of financial transactions.
• Responsible for monthly accounting and reporting of all income and expenditures. Coordinate monthly and year-end close processes; ensure accurate reconciliations. Prepare monthly financial statements for review and approval; post approved financial statements online as required.
• Prepare the annual year-end report F196 and Notes to the Financial Statement for review and approval.
• Prepare and submit all reports accurately and in a timely manner.
• Prepare and post journal entries as required.
• Coordinate an effective and streamlined annual internal audit process in partnership with the accounting team to review school and department financial procedures. Provide timely recommendations and feedback for implementation.
• Manage the district account code structure in accordance with the state accounting manual; maintain an up to date account code list; train other Business Services leaders as back-up to this function.
• Responsible for management of the fixed asset system including depreciation and accrual; post year-end journal entries.
• Maintain and oversee accounting files in an organized and systematic manner.
• Coordinate the resolution of payment issues, interfacing with internal managers and staff as well as external organizations as directed.
• Analyze and prepare financial data and projections; compare and analyze budget to actuals identifying concerns and anomalies for follow up. Collaborate with Business Services team to engage in data review practices.
• Improve and/or create tools and processes to support financial analysis or overall finance team functions. Recommend new accounting and financial management methods as desirable and necessary.
• Work with IT department to troubleshoot technical issues with the business system and to ensure accounting processes are performed accurately and efficiently, including the testing process for new version upgrades in the Accounting system.
• Under the direction of the Controller, provide audit requested information to state auditors.
• Provide training to accounting staff and staff in other departments and schools in accounting procedures and processes. Participate in the development of training information or presentations as directed.
• Respond to requests for information from staff and community as directed.
