Position Overview
The Speech Pathologist provides support and conducts student assessments in all areas of communication development. Working in cooperation with network supervisors, teachers, families, and students, the Speech Pathologist is responsible for providing diagnostic and intervention services for students with speech, language, and hearing disorders to improve the communication development and ensure access to the general education curriculum.
Responsibilities
CultureParticipate in activities that support students' educational programsKeep abreast of best practices in speech and language therapy and language developmentLeadership
Participate in all required Domain, Problem Solving, FIE and annual review meetings as neededProvide consultation to teachers, parents and staff as outlined in IEP and treatment plans and as needed in order to effectively support and problem solve individual student needProvide staff training and education to school staff and parents in the area of communication developmentAssist and guide teachers in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified speech and language delays/disordersProvide professional development to school staff to support students with communication needsCollaboration
Provide consultation to teachers, families and staffConsult with teaching teams to develop and implement of curriculum modifications and appropriate classroom strategies such as visual supports, oral motor exercises, language strips, topics of conversation, and data collectionEnsure students' skills are generalized across settings by collaborating with teaching teams and related service providersAssessment/Evaluation
Ensure evaluations, treatment plans and service delivery are aligned with school, state, and federal guidelinesProvide appropriate diagnostic assessment services to students using established eligibility criteriaConduct assessments, analyzing results, and writing reports to determine strengths and concerns in areas of speech, voice, fluency, pragmatics, language, and oral motor skillsProvide therapeutic services to eligible students using a continuum of service delivery modelsDevelop and implement treatment plans (IEPs/504 and intervention plans) that are strength-based as well as child and family centered for overall educational improvementComplete required supervisory activities with speech-language paraprofessionalCompliance
Maintain accurate records (Maintain an inventory of materials, assessments, and supplies)Monthly StatisticsDaily progress notesWeekly documentation of all services deliveredQuarterly report of student achievement (IEP report cards)Follow established attendance reporting proceduresAttend district, school, and departmental meetingsFacilitate departmental meetingsRequirements
(minimum)
Education: Master's Degree in Speech Pathology and Communication Disorders
Qualifications
A valid license issued by the Illinois State Board of Education and Illinois Department of Professional Regulations endorsed as a Speech PathologistA graduate degree in communication disorders or speech pathology from an accredited University or College programA valid license or credential issued by the state licensing board, with the appropriate Speech Pathologist endorsementPhysical Demands: Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 50% walking, and 40% standing
