The purpose of the job is to establish and maintain a sterile field and safe environment throughout the surgical procedure, to assess instrumentation and equipment needs, and to anticipate and provide instrumentation and equipment needs for the surgeon's use in a timely manner to enhance patient outcomes.

Job Description

This job description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by employees assigned to this department. GENERAL DUTIES

Demonstrates knowledge and practice of basic patient care concepts. Performs and/or provides scrub assistance during procedures which reflect awareness of anatomy, necessary principles, skills, supplies, and adequate knowledge base. Assists the circulating nurse in implementing the perioperative plan of care to include: patient positioning, confirmation/preparation of operative site, updating physician preference card, care of operative specimens and room turnover.

Demonstrates the application of the principles of asepsis. Adheres to unit specific standards, policies and procedures for aseptic techniques. Selects proper sterilization method of instruments/equipment: sterilizes prior to procedures, as necessary and verifies instruments are sterile. Takes corrective action when any unsafe practice, conditions or breaks in aseptic technique occur and reports information to the circulating nurse.

Demonstrates basic surgical case preparation skills. Assists with pulling cases and checks case cart for completeness, obtains supplies and equipment and determines them to be in good working order before a case begins. Prepares the operating room by opening sterile supplies, instruments, and sutures based on scheduled procedure and surgeon preference card. Follows policies for scrubbing, gowning, gloving, setting up back table, draping and counting with the circulating nurse.

Demonstrates the ability to perform the role of first scrub on all basic surgical cases. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon, which includes passing instruments, sutures and other items appropriate to the procedure. Establishes and maintains and organized sterile field. Assists the surgeon by retracting tissue, holding instrumentation to provide exposure and cutting suture under the direct supervision of the surgeon.

Supply Room Access: enters supply room(s) on nursing units as needed to perform necessary job functions. Refrains from manipulating or removing any intravenous fluids that are stored in the area.

EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS

Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

American Heart Association, HeartSaver & First Aid.
