GENERAL SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Executive Director, Talent, Culture and Operations, the Director, Protection Services ensures the safety and protection of the team, visitors, collection, building, and grounds by developing and implementing comprehensive strategic security plans and programs. The Director will develop and support a highly responsive and service-oriented team of protection services leaders and officers who create a safe, pleasant, and welcoming experience for all visitors and colleagues.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Recruit, mentor, develop and successfully manage a team to achieve the strategic objectives and the present and future needs of the department.Manage the department, determine priorities, annual goals, scheduling, and annual budget.Ensure staff support the museum's strategic and annual museum-wide goal, meeting them on schedule and within budget.Create a collaborative work environment by using a performance support process including goal setting, feedback, and development.Oversee strategic and operational planning as it relates to the administration of museum security, emergency response, and asset protection.Plan all security aspects of special exhibitions including staffing and security procedures to protect art objects entering and leaving the museum, and during the exhibition.Collaborate with other operations teams to provide all visitors with an extraordinary service experience at the DIA.Work closely with the Events and Food Services Operations team for security staffing and support of all events, including those after operating hours.Oversee and manage the consistent operation of all electronic, computerized, and integrated security/fire/CCTV systems.Collaborate with museum colleagues to evaluate existing and introduce new safety and security policies and procedures; implement those policies and procedures as necessary.Develop and oversee ongoing training with an emphasis on visitor experience, advanced security standards, and emergency protocol.Assume command in emergency situations and collaborate with local law enforcement or other agencies as required.Stay informed on technological changes in the field and recommend changes or improvements to the Museum's security equipment as needed.Establish and maintain working relationships with federal, state, and local government agencies and private and professional organizations to ensure the continuous protection of the Museum and compliance with regulations.Ensure and maintain the DIA's continuous standing as a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) certified cargo screening facility.Maintain a presence in the museum galleries and with the team.Foster, promote, and support Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA) through the DIA values, active listening, embracing difference, and engaging with empathy to promote a culture of belonging among internal and external stakeholders.Perform other duties as assigned.QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in related field required. Ten (10) years of security management experience preferably in a museum, cultural, or hospitality setting, and five (5) years of leading people required. Certified Protection Professional designation (CPP) preferred. Additional years of experience may be substituted for the degree requirement.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Must be a strategic thinker with the ability to plan and execute goals and objectives.Must possess leadership skills and the ability to lead a team to meet strategic goals supporting the museum strategy and vision.Demonstrated ability to make creative, effective, and timely decisions aligned with organizational mission, vision, values, and strategic direction considering risk and long-term impacts.Must possess a demonstrated understanding of ethical business conduct and professional practices including maintenance and protection of confidential and sensitive information.Demonstrated ability to be an engaged listener with the ability to build consensus within the Museum and with diverse stakeholders externally.Demonstrated ability to share complex information, ideas, and instructions clearly, effectively, and professionally to diverse audiences through talking or writing.Demonstrated experience with budget management including budget development and stewardship of resources and demonstrated fiscal responsibility to stay within budget.Knowledge and awareness of state-of-the-art security technology.Knowledge of federal, state, and local legislative and administrative requirements governing security operations.Demonstrated ability to recognize, assess, and limit liabilities and risk.Ability to calmly and professionally deescalate and resolve challenging situations with team members and visitors.Must be able to successfully manage conflict, experience with mediation preferred.Must have a comprehensive general understanding of security, fire and safety systems, and procedures.Working knowledge of emergency procedures, including disaster preparedness and recovery and familiarity with emergency first aid practices.This position is on call and will respond to the museum as required or render guidance 24 hours/7 days a week/365 days a year. Incumbent will be expected to work regularly on weekends, across all shifts, and additional hours as needed.Must be proficient in the latest version of Microsoft Office 365.Must have proficiency in the use of remote work technology such as scheduling with, connecting to, and using digital collaboration platforms such as Microsoft Teams.Must be able to establish and maintain professional, productive and courteous interactions that promote positive teamwork. This encompasses going beyond giving and receiving instructions and includes but is not limited to (a) performing work activities requiring interacting or speaking with others; and (b) responding appropriately to constructive feedback or suggestions for improvement from a supervisor.
