Salary Grade NC22 Salary Range $70,967.00 - $138,386.00

This position supervises the Engineering Development Squad which upgrades or develops specifications, policies, procedures, and details that govern the design and plan preparation of highway structures. Reviews AASHTO specifications and interims to ensure NCDOT compliance. Oversees the implementation of revisions to the Design Manual. Advises the IT Unit in the development of design software and reviews design software from outside providers prior to implementation. Researches and develops standardized bridge elements. Offers technical assistance to internal and external engineers. Provides the Unit Head assistance in preparing for various internal and external meetings or reports. Identifies research needs for the unit and serves on various research committees. Assigns work, evaluates employee's performance, and trains and develops engineers and technicians, and serves on various technical committees.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Additional Expectations:

Registration as a Professional Engineer in North Carolina is preferred. A thorough knowledge of design practice and procedure for complex and standard highway related structures. Direct and review the design and preparation of highway related structure plans. Ability to establish expectations and clear direction to meet goals and objectives. Ability to apply considerable knowledge of supervisory practices and skill in supervising others. Perform administrative and management duties including evaluating performance, training and coaching. Coordinate and communicate with office and field engineers, other DOT units, FHWA and related outside agencies. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to listen and respond appropriately to others.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience including two (2) years of supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
