SO6PRIMARY PURPOSE:The Special Education Supervisor is directly responsible to the Director of Special Education. The primary function of the Special Education Supervisor is to aid the Director of Special Education with the implementation phase of the Special Education program.QUALIFICATIONS:Minimum Educational Certification:Valid Texas Teaching Certificate with Special Education EndorsementMaster's DegreeSpecial Education Supervisor or Mid-Management CertificateCertified Professional Development and Appraisal System (PDAS) AppraiserThree years of successful classroom experience requiredEducational Diagnostician certification preferredSpecial Knowledge/Skills:Knowledgeable in TEA criteriaStrong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skillsAbility to communicate with all levels of special needs students and their parentsKnowledge in diagnostic and assessment instruments preferredExhibits self-direction, resourcefulness, and is goal-orientedMAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:Managerial Functions:Monitor assigned Special Education classrooms for safety issues and quality of instruction.
Participate in public awareness activities to enhance the Special Education program.Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the district Special Education programs.Work cooperatively with colleagues in addressing the learning and behavioral problems of the target student population.Assist teachers in the effective utilization of instructional assistants.Work with parents and/or administrators regarding Special Education issues or concerns.Work with referrals to Regional School for the Deaf, Texas School for the Blind and other service providers.Monitor confidentiality regulations and assures compliance.Protect confidentiality of information pertaining to students and other staff members.Attend admission, review, and dismissal committee meetings as needed.Supervise assigned Special Education staff.Supervise Diagnosticians to assure that their responsibilities and duties are carried out.Attend ARD meetings as needed.Direct Homebound program and supervise staff; ensure that appropriate state assessments are administered.Direct the Special Ed. Physical Education program and supervise staff.Direct and supervise the Special Olympics.Direct and supervise the VI program and staff.Direct and supervise the AI program and staff.Supervise contracted services for compliance.Supervise diagnosticians and speech pathologists (appros.36 staff.)Supervise the Medicaid Reimbursement Program.Maintain open lines of communication with outside professionals/providers (i.e. psychologists/psychiatrists, MD, Advocacy, CPS, DARS, Tropical Texas MHMR, private counselors, Hidalgo County Juvenile Detention, JJAEP...)Provide guidance/training to private schools, TMC Head-Start, and Hidalgo County Head-Start on the Child Centered Process/Child-Find.Technical and Professional Functions:Demonstrate knowledge of the leading teaching and learning strategies.
Assist teachers in the selection and acquisition of materials and equipment to effectively carry out the IEP for each student.Assist teachers in utilizing effective classroom management procedures and implementation curriculum.Assist teachers in the implementation of appropriate techniques and approaches to match the various learning styles/needs of the learners.Assist in conducting a needs assessment for professional directive activities and formulate a staff development plan on a yearly basis.Assist in parent and staff conferences, and in home parent training.Provide parent training and make home visits when appropriate.Maintain and submit on a timely basis documentation required and/or requested.Conduct official student review (application extender) to ensure compliance with the maintenance of required documentation.Assist principal with campus state assessment recommendation.Stay current with all local, state and federal policies, procedures, and legal requirements.Provide on a regular basis, updated information on federal, state and local policies, procedures and requirements to all districts' staff and parents.Revise required forms to reflect changes in federal, state, and local regulations.Comply with all Special Education regulations with the policies and procedures of the district.Participate in the planning process of the Special Education budget.Staff Evaluation and DevelopmentMonitor lesson plans to ensure linkage between the student's IEP and daily activities.
Assist in the development of special programs.Provide and/or facilitate professional development for Special Education staff and general education staff.Evaluate and/or assist in the appraisal of the Special Education staff.Assist the Special Education Director in building individual growth plans for staff members.School and Organizational ClimateWorks collaboratively and constructively with colleagues and other professionals towards meeting individual student needs.
Serves as a liaison between campus and the Special Education Department.Promotes and supports environment which is conducive to positive staff morale directed toward the achievement of the campus, department, and district's mission.Personal Growth and DevelopmentTake initiative to participate in professional development activities correlated to the child-centered process.
