POSITION SUMMARY
Receives Cytology samples and performs processing for high complexity analysis as defined by CLIA ‘88 in an accurate and timely manner with supervision. Performs all essential functions of a Testing Level II employee, as defined by the department. In addition, is responsible for all aspects of Non Gyn specimen preparation and assists with department compliance with all pertinent laboratory accrediting agencies and regulatory requirements (e.g., CLIA ’88, JCAHO, CAP, OSHA). Personnel report to department supervisor. Performs well in the absence of a supervisor.

CORE FUNCTIONS
1. Performs at the minimum competency required by department established metric in Gyn and NonGyn specimen processing as well as all clerical functions for each specimen type. Must be proficient in the use of all job specific instrumentation in both Gyn and NonGyn areas of the lab.

2. Focuses on quality by ensuring that all work performed, including the collection of quality assurance data is accurate, complete and performed within the time frames defined by the department. Meets department standards for productivity and quality. Properly correlates, labels, and sends out specimens if necessary. Participates in detecting and documenting occurrences that deviate from defined procedures for Gyn and NonGyn specimens. Follows established methods and practices and demonstrates advanced problem solving skills for NonGyn specimen problem. May be responsible for collecting and analyzing quality assurance data for compliance and department specific purposes.

3. Performs supplementary standardized tasks to support other aspects of the Cytology department, which may include organizing specimens to transfer to other clinical departments, slide filing, special processing techniques.

4. Performs supplementary non standardized tasks to support other aspects of the Cytology department, which may include staining of Gyn and NonGyn specimens, add on tests, slide distribution to off site facilities and relevant NonGyn procedures which include cell block processing.

5. Performs and documents routine daily and advanced weekly/monthly maintenance on all instrumentation and staining protocols. Troubleshoots instrument errors/problems and reports instrumentation errors which are unable to correct to the management team.

6. Handles special assignments as designated by the department supervisor which may consist of training new employees, completing or participating in at least one specified project, payroll duties and vial disposal. Responsible for appropriate use of supplies and materials and assists with inventory management. Recognizes and provides input towards opportunities for improvements in financial performance to decrease costs, improve productivity, and improve service. Communicates courteously, professionally, effectively and accurately with internal and external customers.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Demonstrates highly developed interpersonal skills.

  • Proficient in basic computer skills. Demonstrates excellent problem-solving skill, and high level of self-motivation.

  • Must exhibit personal maturity and responsibility.

  • Good reading, writing and math abilities. Communicates effectively in oral and written formats sufficient to demonstrate comprehension.

  • Able to perform detailed work and to work with frequent interruptions in a stressful environment, multi-task, problem solve and memorize.

  • Able to take direction and assimilate instructions quickly.

  • Good organizational skills and ability to maintain confidentiality.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School graduate or equivalent and,

    • Successfully completed military training of 50 or more weeks and served as a medical laboratory specialist OR,

    • Associate’s degree in any field with 20 hours of chemistry and/or biological sciences credits OR,

    • 20 hours of chemistry and/or biological sciences credit with three (3) year’s working in a clinical laboratory OR,

    • MLT (ASCP)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Biological Sciences, or related field.

  • Applicable laboratory experience.

  • Additional related education and/or experience.
