Systems Administrator - Windows & LinuxJob Summary:Reporting to the Associate Director, Systems, the Systems Administrator has responsibility for the effective and efficient operation of the College's servers and systems. The Systems Administrator helps develop, plan, and implement projects and initiatives in the areas of systems operations and security. The Systems Administrator serves as a technical resource and works with the Infrastructure Team and others to deliver stable, reliable, flexible systems and services, and improves everyday tasks and operations that support all College processes. The department is maturing its implementation of Agile practices, GitOps, Infrastructure as code, Automation, Cloud-First approach, Kanban, etc in order to improve the way of working and remove toil.Barnard's server environment is a mixture of Windows and Linux systems (75/25) and this position will be responsible for servers of both types.The Systems Administrator must embrace the principles of workplace justice, diversity, and inclusion and apply them to day-to-day work.This position will be remote, though all Barnard staff members are expected to reside within commuting distance of campus. The employee must be available to be on campus, commuting at their own expense, as necessary to provide physical infrastructure support, attend meetings, training sessions, or similar events or occurrences. While this position is remote, we are a collaborative team and institution working online together through the workday.All remote work arrangements are revocable and may be discontinued by the College at any time and for any reason. These arrangements will be reviewed regularly. In the event of discontinuation, the College will provide advanced notice to the employee when possible.Job Description:Ensure that hardware, software, applications, and services are provisioned, monitored, and maintained in accordance with organizational policies and procedures.Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve incidents related to servers and applications.Plan and recommend courses of action for upgrading hardware and software.Research, test, and propose new systems, server technologies, and processes that can improve our current environment.Respond to business-critical emergencies both during and after business hours.Develop and maintain positive working relationships with others in Barnard College and Columbia University technology departments.Perform related duties as assigned.As mentioned in the job summary, the administrator in this position will be managing both Windows AND Linux systems. You must be comfortable managing a mixed environment.Skills, Qualifications & Requirements:Must be proficient in the use of automation and configuration management tools like Ansible and Jenkins.Must have
strong experience scripting with Powershell, bash, and/or Python.Experience with using versioning control tools such as git.Experience with monitoring tools such as Icinga or Nagios.Familiarity with automated testing tools, such as Selenium.Experience with SAML and Oauth authentication.For Linux Systems Administrator: Experience with the latest Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating systems, BASH, and VMware vSphere.For Windows Systems Administrator: Experience with the latest Windows Server operating systems, Active Directory, Microsoft SQL Server, VMware vSphere, and WSUS.Must have
excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.Ability to deal with sensitive information with confidentiality and tact.Demonstrated ability to remain current with emerging technologies and concepts that are necessary to administer systems.Ability to work both independently and in a collaborative team environment.Adaptable and able to manage and incorporate change.Effective interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Experience with MFA tools.Experience using web services and APIs.Experience with cloud service providers, such as AWS, GCP, and/or Azure.Experience with Workday.Experience with cloud data integration tools, such as Snaplogic or Mulesoft.Experience with some or all of the following: Infrastructure as code, DevOps, immutable servers, LeanIT, and Kanban.Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field; or equivalent training and/or experience.Minimum three (3) years of experience in computer operations, systems administration, and user support.Preferred Qualifications:Experience in Higher Education.Salary Range:
$70,000-$90,000The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training.
