General Description

SUNY Niagara is seeking an accomplished visionary leader to serve as our next Vice President of Academic Affairs ( VPAA ). As the chief academic officer the VPAA will be an influential force in shaping the academic mission and direction of the college. This pivotal role requires an innovative, collaborative, and strategic leader who will inspire excellence across all academic programs and initiatives, fostering a culture of integrity, inclusion, and continuous improvement.

The VPAA is responsible to the President for all operations related to academic programs, educational policy, academic planning, academic resources, faculty personnel actions, institutional effectiveness and all economic development and continuing education non-credit programs and personnel.

Typical Work Activities

Plans, supervises and coordinates policy development, and implementation in all academic affairs and issues.

Supervises and coordinates the activities of Academic Affairs which includes the planning, development, operation and evaluation of the education programs and related services of the college including, but not limited to the academic divisions, all credit offerings within the degree and certificate bearing programs, all workforce development non-credit programs; the Lewis Library Center and Faculty Resource Center, ACE , General Education and learning outcomes assessment and reporting compliance, new program development, credit for prior learning and challenge exams, international education, and applicable advisory committees.

Assists the President in the administration of the College and in the organization and use of data on the educational needs of the community including curriculum management reviews for enrollment, retention and graduation.

Provides educational leadership to faculty and staff and coordinates with other college departments and divisions in implementing the academic mission of the College.

Oversees the recruitment, selection, professional development and evaluation of personnel within assigned areas including administrators, Division Chairs, teaching faculty, librarians, technical assistants and non-ranked professionals.

In coordination with academic administrators and Division Chairs, formulates and administers the Academic Affairs portion of the College budget in accordance with College policies and procedures.

Is the accreditation liaison officer for the college, ensuring standards of accreditation are known and are met.

Oversees the grants office functions and grants personnel.

Oversees CAP and other High School district initiatives

Is an ex-officio member of the Faculty Senate and its executive committee.

Attends regional and state meetings of Chief Academic Officers and national meetings or conferences as appropriate.

Coordinates with Division Chairs and AVP’s to review and adjust the schedule of classes for each term based on student needs and enrollment projections.

Ensures facilities are appropriate to meet the academic needs of the college and coordinates with operations personnel as needed.

Provides the leadership needed to ensure a high quality, stimulating, student-centered learning environment including face-to-face and on-line offerings.

Serves as the chairperson of the Academic Council and forms ad hoc committees and task forces as needed for the implementation of initiatives or regulatory requirements.

Serves on the Executive Council and advises the President in formulating overall plans, policies, and procedures for the achievement of goals and purposes of the College.

Maintains currency with higher-education trends, research and best practices.

Serves as a close liaison with the Institutional Effectiveness office.

The Vice President of Academic Affairs shall serve as Acting President and assume the duties and responsibilities of the President at times when the President is incapacitated or unable to perform the duties of the office. The Board of Trustees shall confirm any appointment that exceeds one month.

Responsible for the evaluation of current academic programs and development of new academic programs.

Responsible for the assignment of all classes.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Ability to relate to a diverse academic community; able to supervise multiple functions; ability to represent the college’s interest within the local community, ability to work effectively as a member of the senior management team; computer literate with good communication skills; ability to maintain positive relationships among peers, subordinates, and superiors; ability to speak in a public forum; ability to manage a large and diverse organizational structure; ability to physically perform the responsibilities of the position.

Required Qualifications

Doctoral degree in field or discipline;

Significant academic administrative experience that must include experience with program development, assessment and experience with the administration or supervision of distance learning courses and workforce development programs;

Full time teaching experience at the post-secondary level.
