University Marketing & Communications has an exciting opening for a Full-Stack Developer. This is a full-time, permanent position.
The University of Washington’s web properties, including its centrally- and unit-managed websites, are a vital channel for communicating with the University’s many stakeholders. Located within University Marketing and Communications, the Web Strategy team creates, manages and supports many of the University's websites, including the University’s homepage. The team creates and maintains a cohesive and compelling online experience for visitors that advances our brand promise, and implemented in a manner that empowers internal stakeholders working within the UW’s communications model.
To support that work, the Full-Stack Developer will build and maintain reusable integrations between WordPress and University systems that engage users with our content. They will lead large-scale change that improves user experiences by leveraging our infrastructure, frameworks and code to create memorable user journeys.
What You Will Do:
Building and maintaining engagement features – 70%
• Plan, build and maintain connections between the University’s content tagging system, Content Management System (CMS) and centralized WordPress content.• Develop and maintain reusable integrations between WordPress and other University systems, leveraging internal APIs, platforms and other data sources.• Troubleshoot issues that arise, explore solutions to complex problems, and collaborate with team members and others to identify and develop new features and tools for use throughout the University.• Research, implement and maintain technologies, tools, components and features to support and integrate the UW’s web framework and other systems that embrace best standards and practices.• Effectively communicate technical solutions to stakeholders and gain buy-in for implementation.
Front-end development – 25%
• Develop high-profile sites and pages, and other public-facing sites, pages and online projects that promote the University’s priorities.• Work with designers, UX practitioners, content authors and key stakeholders to amplify stories about the University.• Develop and maintain themes, templates, plugins and other tools for the main University website and associated sites.• Identify existing and evolving technology to upgrade the design and information architecture of key websites. Work with designers and UX practitioners to create and implement designs.
Other Duties – 5%
• Participate in the campus web community, representing UMAC.• Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in computer science, engineering, programming, web development, information management, information technology, human-computer interaction or related field AND two years of experience in web development.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
What You Bring:
• Working experience with WordPress API and CLI, theming and plugin development.• Working experience utilizing REST APIs and return formats (JSON, XML).• Working experience utilizing PHP development, Git, React and WordPress Blocks (Gutenberg).• Working experience with Linux environments, terminal commands and shell scripting.• Ability to troubleshoot and debug code and think critically to solve complex problems.• Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills, including effectively communicating technical solutions and reporting priorities and deliverables to peers and leaders.• Demonstrated ability to create, edit and document reusable, semantic, secure and accessible code (WCAG 2.1 Level AA or higher).• Strong knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript and responsive web design.• Working knowledge of Bootstrap and SASS.• Strong understanding of UX standards and/or Universal Design.• Familiarity with JavaScript run time environments, like node, package managers such as npm and Yarn, and automation tools including Gulp, Grunt and Webpack.• Familiarity with Google Analytics, SEO and digital marketing techniques.• Familiarity with MySQL or similar databases.• Familiarity with the latest Web techniques, technologies, languages and libraries.

• Cubicle/Open workspace environment, which may result in additional or higher levels of noise and visual distractions.• Ability to work evening and weekend hours, as necessary, on short or limited notice.
